Spot on, Mr Lean. Old Mr Ryder (Charles' father) was far more U than Charles, even though Charles was always rolling his eyes at him. The only thing more fun than class envy is class irony.

Rex is pretty vulgar IMO. Not to mention hard-working. More willing to get his hands dirty than the aristos, who, speaking broadly, had been drained (in every sense of the word) by WWI.
