Red patterns on navy cloth

How do you feel about this combination?

Red pin or chalk stripes on navy wool, even windowpanes.

Give your instant impressions of all 3 or 4 different men below.

How do you all feel about a suiting with red stripes on navy wool? In either a bright red or a dull rust red color? You may categorically like or dislike the look. However, for those who aren’t quite sure, here are three scenarios.

1. A man comes to your office to interview for a job. He is wearing a worsted navy suit with relatively bright but thin beaded pinstripes set about 1/2 inch apart with a white shirt, dark brown calf monk strap shoes and a ruby red woven tie with a self jacquard pattern.  How do you react to him?

2. A man walks past you on a sidewalk in a DB navy flannel with rust colored chalk stripe. He is wearing a par of dark brown suede oxfords, a red and white mini gingham check shirt with white collar and white French cuffs, a navy tie with widely spaced red and white dots on it. What is your impression of such a man?

3. You meet with someone in a similar industry for lunch and he arrives in a blue suit with a rust windowpane, medium brown calf shoes, a light blue end on end shirt and a navy tie with red and white stripes. What goes through your mind as you shake hands?

If 3 above cannot apply to you. You’re placed at a front row table at an industry lecture and the CEO of XYZ corp. goes to the podium to extol on recent profits. He is wearing a navy hard finished worsted with an alternating faint white and a stronger, medium red chalk stripe, black shoes, a white spread collared shirt and a silver wedding tie.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I really like the look of a bright red pinstripe on navy wool.

Chalkstripe would be too much as I imagine pencil would also.  Windowpayne even worse.

1. I think he's dressed well.  Perhaps a bit too foppishly for an interview - the ultimate 'play it safe with your dress' situation
2. Too busy of an outfit - but decently dressed (minus the suede shoes)
3. That outfit is rather busy.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I own almost nothing red.  Not ties.  Not shirts.  I am probably the wrong person to answer this question.  See if that stops me smile.

1.  Sounds OK, but I do not really like the idea of a solid red tie on a white shirt.  Seems a bit presidential to me.
2.  That I would notice.  No white collar for me, but altogether very elegant.  The DB jacket should be a touch short in my estimation, but again that is personal taste.
3.  Again, I do not really like the choice of shirts, but the suit sounds great.  I like rust, just not true red.  I don't really like end on end and would prefer a light blue striped shirt with a solid maroon tie.
4.  Sounds great, but I would not wear a silver tie.  I might use a dark yellow with some rust or brown neat patterns.

They all sound well dressed with the exception of #1, but #2 sounds the best.  DB with suede is very chic.

There is a coat made of something like this in Roetzel and I think it looks excellent.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

Twenty years ago I would've said no, but I now sort of like red window-pane on navy.  Maybe even pinstripes.  Thicker chaulk stripe not so much.

As for the figures you mention, I'd look askance (for a moment) at anything that stands out or is too flashy, though I'd hope I'd be able to concentrate on what the person had to say rather than his clothes.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I love all those combinations.  I think red on navy looks really smart.

I might substitute a striped shirt for the white one in the first example.

I am also not a huge fan of monk straps. Otherwise, I like most of what you posted there without change. Are these people wearing proper pocket hankies?

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I'd put the rust windowpane on the DB navy flannel, keep the dark brown suede oxfords (narrow round cap toe, leather sole/heel, beveled waist), substitute a dark, almost French, blue royal oxford shirt w/ wide spread collar and barrel cuffs, solid rust cashmere tie, paisley silk pocket square in rust/navy/mid blue/green/gold, and navy wool/cashmere socks.  I'd wear a dark brown fur felt trilby and, if necessary, tweed SB overcoat in predominantly dark brown tweed w/ notch lapels, patch and flap pockets and deep sleeve cuffs. brown peccary gloves, and dark brown flat weave cashmere scarf.  I wore this combination during a very cold snap in February; however, sadly, the suit is solid navy, no windowpane.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I would think they come from countryside because of their shoes.

Red and pink match very well with blue.

Matching dots/stripes/checkes is not a good idea.

I would go for 2 plain and 1 patterned, for exemple =

Striped suit/plain shirt/plain tie

Striped suit/plain shirt/striped ties could be possible if the stripes are very different in size.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

Found with a search. Sorry, I feel on AAAC I have to explain why I posted an old thread.

I was considering buying a Canali suit with a red pinstripe. You dont see that around much. It seemed a little menial, like something a postman would wear. Maybe it is just because you rarely see them. Is there a tradition for it in America or in the UK?

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I've seen some nice examples of navy blue with (subtle) red windowpane at the Andover Shop.  I like them.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I think they might be considered unacceptable by people who never had access to mtm or custom swatch selections. That might even be changing. I wouldnt make a meal out of them unless you deliberately liked and wanted that as your moniker.

I have never bought a navy with a red pattern on it. Unless you count that navy with a baby pink stripe I thought I was getting which was sent directly to my tailor and turned out to be a sort of hot pink, which some people interpret as a scarlet. Funny that if I wear hot pink accessories with the suit people think the stripe is pink and if I wear red, they think it's red.

Re: Red patterns on navy cloth

I have a very dark blue 2 button SB suit with a red pinstripe on a half inch spacing interleaved with a shadow stripe. I had it made up while I was working in London after I saw another suit with a fine red pinstripe. I can't remember for sure but I think the cloth was from Holland and Sherry, probably about 10/11 oz. It works very well as the pinstripe is thin and relatively unobtrusive. I wouldn't wear it to an interview or with brown shoes though.
