Campaign to stop Burlington Arcade "facelift"

This planned vandalism by must be stopped. It must be saved from Chav scum brands like Jimmy Choo and Gucci.

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-24001595-burlington-arcade-battles-bling-invasion.do

"The shopkeepers' campaign has attracted celebrity support, with film director Michael Winner attacking the "disgraceful mutilation" of the Regency arcade, and calling it "typical of how beautiful areas of London are going to be vandalised"."

http://www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/8053.aspx

""The plans include installing three large stainless steel art installations, painting over the traditional brick façade inside and installing uplighting. None of this is in keeping with this unique 1819 Regency arcade, which was created to house independent traders"

"Referring to Burlington Arcade as "an historic thing", Mr Marino defends the transitory nature of his designs, and is quoted saying: "I like that my stores aren't built to last"."

"The previous owners bought the arcade five years ago for £64m and sold it for £104m. They renewed my lease in 2008 with a 23.5% increase in rent – it's about £400 per square foot at the moment. Now, though, the new owners want to impose a 40 to 60% increase as well as a nine per cent charge on the businesses' entire turnover."

Geez, fellas, I guess you didn't the memo:  Money talks, bullshit walks.   Creative destruction, and all that.  Raze the goddamn relic and put up a couple of hotels.  England's flagshhip Walmart would be perfect for that location - although you might have to provide better motorway access, from, say, the A40 perhaps?

Thinking about it, I'd have thought that it would have been listed in some way.

Didn't they get the memo that homo-biker fetishism reached it's peak with George Michael in the late 80's? Fucking losers.

Re: Campaign to stop Burlington Arcade "facelift"

I’m confident that the listing will stop most of the architectural vandalism (especially since removal of the pendant lighting might actually be an improvement, if the uplighting is hidden); what concerns me is that the owners would rather like to kick out all the independent shops and replace them with Gucci, Prada, &c. &c. which will be pretty much irreparable. It would probably represent the beginning of the end for St James’ since the arcade is the main link to the already spoilt Piccadilly.

^ Googling my own question Yes it is.  http://www.petermarinoarchitect.com/www/#/home

Reminds me of the Sopranos episode where one of Tony's men spots one of his capos in a leather bar.

Poor chap eventually gets executed by a rival mafioso who is also his outraged brother-in-law.
