These brands of Scottish knitwear seem slightly evasive. They have a reputation of being, perhaps, a tad better quality than Alan Paine - dodgy now, excellent thirty plus years ago. Be interested to hear from owners/wearers.
Paine is pretty mediocre nowadays. Pringle is all over the place. MacKinnon isn't too bad. There are others.
Still Made in Scotland Pringle, I think is ok.......always been dubious about second hand cashmere, as most examples I've seen are fit for the recycle bin. Though Cardinals look good from what i can tell from his pics.
I now have my first - I hope not my last - McGeorge: courtesy of farrago. Lovely.
Wanted to bump this to complement the L&S post.
Some Drumohr on Ebay at the moment. Quite expensive.
Drumohr and Ballantyne went out of business and an Italian company bought the names. They now maufacture Smedley style knitwear that's made in Italy and extremely flimsy.
Vintage names like Drumohr and Braemar as well as brands I've never heard of based in Elgin and such often turn up in the charity shops round my way. Usually in sizes L and up. If anyone wants me to keep my eye out for anything in particular (sizes, styles, weight, brands etc) just let me know.
In fact a coffee shop up the road sells Johnstones of Elgin Cashmere scarves at very good prices and the local tourist spots sell lots of scottish made knitwear that doesn't usually make it into bigger shops.
After many years - too many - I managed to pick up a McGeorge sweater at a bargain price. And I mean a bargain price. Not, however, cashmere. The one I had from farrago all those years ago comes out more or less every time the sun shows itself in these northern wastelands (about as often as our last practising werewolf). It's great, it's subtle, it's charming, it's creamy, it looks good with a pink/white candy stripe and navy chinos. The newbie is Argyle and of thick Shetland wool. No-one seemed very interested: one diffident bid - then mine. £4.99.
Drumohr remain a slightly different matter.
