Re: What's Cooking?

not sure about it... I did not want to argue for the German cooking as such, in general it's probably pretty bad... have you tried "Labskaus" (Northern German sea food dish) or "Schweinshaxe" (typical Bavarian fat pork)?

on the other hand, I don't know much about British food, never tried a greesy spoon or some of the posh stuff... I was always happy with a moderate Indian take away or Kebab etc... as I was always on a budget on my UK travels, and that budget wasn't spent on food...

Re: What's Cooking?

My daughter bought me some German sausage a few years ago.  Very chewy.  Very, very chewy.

Re: What's Cooking?

I also have to stress the fact that most of the regional variation in Germany is going to get lost due to culinary globalisation like everywhere else, there's McDonald's, Burger King, KFC everywhere.....

In a few years, I suppose, only some villages will have some regional restaurants, and they are going to get more and more expensive...

A nice effect of the globalisation, on the other hand, is that you get lots of Italian, Chinese, Greek, Spanish, Thai, Indian and Turkish food, most of it fast food though, but the better ones are rare, and there are certainly not half as much as all these cheap American plastic chains...

Re: What's Cooking?

You've reminded me:  Turkish food is excellent.  Very good resturant not too far from here.  Delicious bread and potatoes, lamb and rice.

Re: What's Cooking?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that Gibson Gardens is an Italian enthusiast.  Who wouldn't be?  I remember eating a seafood platter in Brindisi - all their little tentacles hanging out of the crispy breadcrumbs - veal stew in Rome, near Termini - delicious hot panini - also in Rome, in one of the rougher outer suburbs, a few miles north-west of the Vatican.

Re: What's Cooking?

Oh yes, Italian food!

GG is right about it...

Best food I've ever eaten in my whole life.

If I ever get married, it's a girl from Riccione. I hope she has learned a lot from her mother, but I'm afraid she's gone too much in the current direction of low carb, light everything fads... last time she was here, we were always eating out, so I'm not sure...

but when I think back to when I was there for the first time... La dolce vita! Even a sandwitch was a sensual experience!

A great French late autumn/winter dish is beef and bacon, cooked with onions, garlic, orange peel, tomato puree, a little red wine and black olives.

I love German food.   Maultaschen, zander, potato salad, wurst.  Can't get enough of it.

Re: What's Cooking?

Anyone like jellied eels?  I made the mistake of buying some in Hunstanton years ago.  Like chewing on soft rubber and blunt razor blades.  The cockneys down there seemed to guzzle them by the bucketful.

Re: What's Cooking?

Thanks Heikki, I'll give that try I think. Scotland's always produced good Lamb and (not considered to be nearly as good) Mutton. Most often here people don't do anything to lamb but maybe a rosemary and mint herb crust... I like a bit more interest.

I've not tried Finnish food but I've had some Swedish, which I loved.

Piri Piri Chicken is worth a go if you're even in Portugal. Nothing like the generic shite you get in supermarkets.

While in Portugal I also had a great Octopus salad, with green pepper and the sweetest onions I've ever eaten. Portugals food was great and had it's own identity completely. Completely original and relies heavily on imported spice (a restaurant owner told us this was because of the countries spice trading past).

In defense of German food I love the sausages you guys make. The Gcould could teach the Brits a thing or two about making quality sausage.

The Polish make a good sausage too. And excellent pickles of all varieties.

Re: What's Cooking?

Never dared try vindaloo.  Madras has always been hot enough for me.  Balti is great with lamb and chicken.  Surprised no-one has yet mentioned stir-fry.  I love chicken with pineapple.  I used to live near a great Chinese food store.  Oyster sauce - lovely.

Good oil, timing and an extractor fan will get you there.
