I hope this chap doesn't mind posting his blog, but his compilation is interesting...
http://futuremd.blogspot.com/2007/02/most-elegant-old-hollywood-actors.html
Didn't bother to read the original blog, but my own short list would be:
Ray Milland
Fred Astaire
Adolph Menjou
William Powell
Cary Grant
Gregory Peck
Would James Stewart count as "old Hollywood"?
And, more recently:
Anthony Hopkins
Terrance Stamp
The problem is that some of these actors were so damned good looking that it wouldn't matter (to an extent) what you dressed them in. As Charlie Davidson said of Chet Baker: "That son of a bitch would look good in anything."
Great Blog. - I've been enjoying it hugely.
Anything you cared to share about your father's sense of personal style would interest me greatly too.
I never quite know how my daughter sees me and it's interesting to try to guess!

I'd like to suggest that if anyone notices a movie coming up on Turner Classics or another channel that seems particularly viewable from a style standpoint, post the details here.
I liked Ray Milland's look in The Big Clock
Ralph Meeker's stylish Mike Hammer in Kiss Me Deadly
and
Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo
William Powell in any Thin Man
I like Monty Clift off screen.
Inelegant elegance was his forte.
