i expect to live for another 40 years. on the average 5 shirts last me 4 years. not that the shirts are frayed, but they lose the tactile quality, the reason for the purchase (by my voluptuary self). i do no refurbishing with spare collars or cuffs as the shirts would have lost their sheen. and sometimes tiny pinpricks appear. be they mothmade or congenital, i readily banish them to the dustbin.
thus the arithmetic requires 50 shirts for storage. on the issue of girth, i must confess that my life requires discipline as the allowance for neck and arms is less than 0.5 inch. 43 of my shirts will just lie neatly folded and the 7 to be used for the week hung. this paucity of space is a direct result of the minimalist design of my place. on the issue of trousers, i plan to have about 20 pairs. i travel very lightly and will pack only 1 pair of trousers and two shirts plus necessities.
on the subject of formal shoes i have JL Perrier, Baros, Phillip II and EG Malvern whereas for casual i have 3 pairs of JL Trinidad and 1 pair of Santoni. i have had most of them for more than 5 years and the most pressing problem remains their resoling. however since the brands will probably outlast me, it will not prove intractable.
There is an act of faith here isn't there?
I buy shirts that fit me now in the hope that they will fit me in 20 years time, if I last that long.
(To be honest I have Brooks OCBDs from '85 that are still more than full of life. They are the shirts of Dorian Gray...)
Anyway...
Once you start stocking up on favourite wardrobe items doesn't your wardrobe take over your life just that little bit more?
I really don't want to put on weight if it means goodbye to those old Duckheads that you just can't get anymore. You know the ones - Good quality, flat front khakis with the 'D' ring side tabs from J. Simons circa '88 (were they?)
And what if I could no longer fit into my two last Troys?
I have to stop posting now... I'm upseting myself...
Who else is stocking up & what is the impact on them of doing this?
