I recently came across the one of the books mentioned in the article--Still Open--and found it fascinating. Also worth noting is Common Ground's "England in Particular" campaign: http://www.england-in-particular.info/particular/e-campgn.html
That little shop that's mentioned, which sells coffee, tea, and pickled whateveritis, seems like a good alternative to Fortum. I like old shops like that. I lived in an English village for a while, and there were a few old shops, but most had been killed. It was pleasant and I liked the idea of walking around and seeing people & buying the 5 or 6 newspapers everyday. Not to mention playing baseball of the village's cricket pitch.
Those types of stores are my favorite.
When I was in Shanghai, there was still a small selection of those impossibly vacuum-like shops, what with old machines and antique rosewood furniture, but of course most of them are gone now.
