Oo, did you ever hear this 60s psychedelic gem. I think the first time I heard it was at my friends 8th grade graduation party. His older brother had a band playing literally in the garage.

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

When I got in the car before ? & The Mysterians playing 96 Tears was on - nicely trashy and a bit underrated.

Next up they played Psychotic Reaction by Count Five - which is a good song with a catchy riff until its spoilt by that pseudo "psychedelic" bit.

I had been listening to a Jim Morrison doco and it occurred to me that 96 Tears could easily have been a Doors song.

Manzarek  had been saying that him and Jim got together over a love of The Beats and he thought Jim sounded like Chet Baker singing when they met up after film school and then he thought Jims songs would sound good with a bit of Ray Charles and Jimmy Smith organ behind it.

This is going out to 4fhepcat and all the other super cool cats who appreciate avant garde, complex, sophisticated music. Do not click if you don't have at least 2 years of music appreciation and theory studies behind you.

You're right. When it came out, of course I mocked that "bubblegum".I heard it on the car radio with my grandaughters the other day - yeah we were rockin'.

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

People like hepcat used to call all pop music bubblegum. But there really was a sub genre of "Bubblegum', shit like the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and the Ohio Express, I think they were all interchangable studio musicians. I think only that 'Sugar, Sugar" made it out alive.

I may have posted this before but it always seems to be going round my head.

Screaming Lord Sutch pre-empting the Velvets with the one.

Very hypnotic and trippy

On second thought, before you get that light and talk to Harpo maybe you should watch this as a cautionary tale.
