I haven't read the links, but I did get thrown out of the Ritz bar in London once. I think that earns me some street cred.
The Algonquin, used to go there when the Blue Bar was a small room off the east side of the lobby. though it was nice to sit on the lobby and ring a bell on the table. different now, but not a bad place for a drink. even in the big room on the west side of the lobby.
What about Clardiges?
The late John Morgan used to cash his cheques there as some form of aesthetic point.
Or maybe the Savoy?

The Algonquin is on my to-do list.
Sad to hear about the Savoy. I used to meet my Pa after work in the American Bar there.
The Ritz of 'Puttin' on the Ritz' was obviously the height of 1929 NYC fashion & style -
I was wondering what you'd say now -
'Puttin' on the Chelsea' might have been correct in the '70's if you were of a certain sort...
