Somehow I feel that putting gems or precious metals on the shoe is cheating.

Indeed, most of those "shoes" are infact diamond studded sneakers/trainers. Vulgarity incarnate, including the Luis Vuitton ones.
Take the precious metals, gems and skins away, and all that is left are cheap trainers.

Now you know how people can spend money to touch status they will never have.
Reminds me of this story of this guy who worked in retail clothes and ordered everything for himself that celebrity customers he admired ordered, which he could not afford.
