That's a beautiful jacket.

DB odd jackets are pretty rare and they do look somewhat old-fashioned - very Apparel Arts.

I personally think a 6x2 stance looks best on a city suit or a navy blazer - for a sporty jacket, as here, a 4x1 would be perfect.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

Well strictly speaking in finance circles, I have to say the reaction to someone wearing a DB would be that you are odd. The DB is so out of favor that if you were wearing one, the feeling would be that you were making a statement. Personal statements are not well thought of in finance where teamwork is usually the burden for you. It's interesting that on senior people it would be considered a positive bc it would signal power to do what you want or maybe a firm with a little bit of imagination. However on interviewees the DB on a candidate for a finance position would be the kiss o death.

In finance, you want to look good but not odd and you don't want anyone's attention focussing on why you are wearing something.

Exceptions would be made for non Americans wearing the DB but they are not well thought of by the American finance community in terms of work ethic.

Also interesting is that people not in finance can wear the DB suit and finance people might think it a positive. If you come to the firm to sell advertising, or some product they may need.

Reactions are mixed on peak lapels and this just may be a generational thing or it may be that a lot dont know what it is.

Colorful shirts  are fine.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

I found that in England working in Media & Advertising wearing those odd Ivy clothes that I like helped because I looked less like a stiff & a 'suit' and could mix with the creative guys more.
Accountants who looked like Accountants weren't liked on the whole & were the subject of jokes & gossip.

I'm sure had I worked in Finance or a Bank I'd have been sacked very quickly, but in a 'softer' industry being quirky made me seem more human so non-Accounts people could relate to me more.
Fellow Accountants sniffed at me a bit, but I think my look did help me with those higher up.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

Makes sense.
My accounting was purely company accounting back then, Management & Financial, and there was a problem with the creatives and the 'serious' people not mixing in the industries I worked in. Beng an accountant who wasn't an accountant worked quite well for me - But only in those industries. I did other short-lived contract jobs which I had to get out off quickly as the environment was too straight for me and my brand of cheerful drunken fun was not appreciated. They even disliked all my schoolboy jokes about double-entry book-keeping.
Tough crowd.
Now I stay at home and just work for friends & family or friends of friends.
It's good to be a slob.

Some good comments. I notice that the U.S. Attorney General wears a double breasted suit. Although he is definitely not the fashion plate.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

I spoke to another friend who makes a lot of custom made suits for the finance and legal communities. Double breasteds make up about 50% of their sales. They reccommend that men get them. He thinks DBs look better and the men he sells his suits to either dont care what people think or do not have to care.

He pointed out that in 20 plus years in the biz he's never seen a rtw collection that featured double breasted suits (or adventurous or statement ladened cloths); although double breasteds will be a strong part of many designer collections this fall.

So men who get custom suits wear the DB precisely because no one else really does. Interesting to wonder at what point a sign of "Go to hell" individualism registers as "Obviously out of touch" by the masses who might see an item so seldmly as to think theyre looking at a man who is backward and doesnt know better than them, rather than at a confident dresser.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

I remembered this thread but it took me a looong time to locate it. FNB, you might want to make the search function a little more user friendly. Just a thought.

Last month, I bought a dark one button, notch lapel suit. I wanted to ask what kind of reactions a one button suit gets or if it is barely noticed at all. I thought nothing of it when I purchased it but now that I wear it, I find myself a bit self conscious. Is this one button style pretty normal nowadays?

I shall commission a suit:

So let it Bespoken
So let it be done!

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

Under the "You'd be surprised what no-one notices" category:
Our office ( ultra-conservative Fortune 500 corp) is "business dress" M-Th (suits and ties) with "casual Fridays" -SC or shirtsleeves ( tie or no tie at wearers option).  About 50% of my business wardrobe is DB's. FWIW, almost all of the compliments I get are for the DB suits. For fun today ( It's quite hot and muggy here)  I'm wearing a 4x2 DB sportcoat w 3 patch pockets. The cloth is a P&H gold herringbone with a sky blue and wine pencil overcheck ( FNB- I got a sky blue lining on this one smile ),  a sky blue spread collar twill shirt, very light grey/beige slacks and a wine tie with sky blue stripes. Aside from some smiles from the younger ladies in the department, no one really noticed. I do dress somewhat "brighter" than some of my colleagues but this passed unremarkably.

I'm coming to think that the folks on the forums tend to overanalyze these things.

Nope, not a tweed, it's a light (8-9 oz?) worsted jacketing. I'll post pics tonite. smile The fit still needs some tweaking so they'll be on a hanger rather than on me.

Re: Ordinary workplace reactions to custom clothes

Lol, dont worry about the folds, we all suffer from 'em.

I see what you mean, very tweedy but in a summery sense. I see your tailor believes in security giving you two inner buttons.

The sky blue lining is definitely different but it goes with the color in the jacket. Side note: I suppose bc it is DB you could wear any lining at all bc no one would see it.
