I think such things can also be cultural, and I find these differences, like the black shoe/brown shoe debate, of some interest. For instance, in the African-American community the black suit is not considered a fashion faux pas.
It is the same with the fedora. It is still worn regularly by a certain generation of African American men, and they would not consider themselves fully dressed without one.
