The iGentry and Dubai are made for eachother: both are a great, sucking void of banal cruelty trying to convince itself that rabid consumption will save it.

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

I think most people who are fortunate enough to spend their time considering their clothes, on the whole are trying to fulfil a projection of their ego, and in doing that try to mask their insecurities to themselves and the world. That is pretty much why advertising works. An extension of this then is people on here, and other places, who raise the level away from popular ideas of what they want to be, by doing this the begin to narrow down the perspective to only something they can choose to have an upper-hand on, this in a way is individuality. But when thought of in that way individuality is the highest form of insecurity.

If someone has taken the time to form such a list of ideals and rules that no one can better it, or you will find that they will chop and change their ideas in order to always be to the contrary, again for the same reason of not letting slip of their perceived standing. You can pretty much gather that person is incredibly insecure, and they will actually fight to maintain things to their ideals under the disillusion it is because they are right or true. This is the trick the mind plays on people with extreme views.

But I suppose clothes are also just pieces of design, and most people recognise and aspire to some type of design in form and harmony, again this is probably just the unsettled mind trying to bring some kind of order to the chaos. And in a way is no different, a form of control.

I'm sure both ways of considering clothes comes from the same place, the fact we are all at the mercy of things way out of our control, so we latch on to a thing that helps us cope.

I've always had to justify liking clothes to myself because of always thought of the attainment of things as being pretty vacuous. But I've always been interested in visual harmony and art, so I justify clothes, and the liking of clothes in that way, I'm not really sure that is any different, it is still an insecurity feeding an obsession.

The cold also justifies an interest in clothes. smile

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

But is it elitism? Dressing better than others? Whats to stop anyone from taking an interest in how they dress? Even people that take an interest are in the main looking like slobs. There must be some thought put into buying clothes so how come men wear things that fit so badly or just don't suit their body shape or just look plain ugly. Is it wrong to look in a mirror and consider your clothes? Because I'm sure everyone does it, its just most people can't look beyond whats in fashion. Isn't that why men look at old photos and say  "My god, did I really wear that"?
Thats insecurity, following the crowd, not the other way round. Its a sign of confidence, its why wearing good clothes gain you respect, that goes hand in hand. Girls like men with confidence, thats why girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man.

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

FNB - Haha smile

I suppose you can only see the problem if you want to, out of all the addictions buying clothes isn't too bad a vice. But my point is, and this is why people are quick to anger a lot of the time. Is that you have manifested an image based on your delusion or idea of yourself, from your experiences and environment.

Your habits are reconfirmed to you as you get a compliment, or win some short lived success. But you soon tire of what got you the compliment, or who gave you it, because the reward is short lived, and temporary, so you have to buy new things and impress new people, or women, because you are in the loop of attaining reward through material means.

Like I said though to me this is just one part of clothes, the other goal could be to achieve visual harmony which again serves a purpose more than just that. Maybe again that is used for attraction, or a display of intelligence. Who knows, all I'm really saying as that for all you do, and the repetition of these habits never gets you to where you really want to be, because if it did, you would stopped by now.

THat is what I'm saying is we are all kidding ourselves, and if we stood back, we might lead more rewarding lives because of it. I don't know, I'm thinking out loud. But how many shirts, shoes or ties does it take before the penny drops? Why do we get angry when criticised, and why do we spend so much time critiquing. It is all insecurity, but like how you go cold and shivery when you have a boiling temperature, in a perverse way we see this acquisition of things as strength, when really it is weakness.

Get over it, learn to understand it, use it and enjoy it.

I've not come along to upset anyones party, and I'm not saying I don't do it myself, I'm just wondering what lies beyond it. A better place, a worse place? An indifferent place probably.
