Re: The Return of No.1 Savile Row

I had an email from Kathryn Sargent saying she's now set up her own business and based at 6 Sackville Street.

Kathryn Sargent is off on her own; sharing premises with Meyer & Mortimer. God Speed to her.

Sadly, a noble thread sinks to the level of one of the late and lamentable Carry On films.

Cor, she's got knockers, huh, huh!

I'm trying to help you, I'm trying to help you to have standards. I'm trying to make you know that the world isn't pleased to see you. You're ugly and superfluous and ignorant and you should be frightened and meek and grateful.

I didn't think they allowed Rottweilers into shops.

Re: The Return of No.1 Savile Row

I don't know why, but Savile Row has beens going on a decline since the 60's or 70's, i believe. Can anybody tell me why? And where are all the good english tailors. It was said that Gieves and Hawkes was the best. Now it can barely live up to No 1 Savile Row.

Re: The Return of No.1 Savile Row

^I use to buy G&Hs RTW stuff from their Chester store back in the mid to late 90s, it was extremely expensive for me then, but seriously good gear. Mainly shirts and trousers. The ties were a bit plain and stuffy for me, but they did have some decent knitted ties one season. It was recognisably English with its own sensibility and style that if you knew, would instantly by attributed to G&H. Reinforced with C&Js shoes, it felt like I had arrived.

Some of the online stuff was good five or six years ago, then they the quality went cheap and nasty, with super slim modern fits. Like Brooks, there must be elements of strength remaining amongst the dross.

Re: The Return of No.1 Savile Row

David has made several pertinent points. It is important to distinguish G&H bespoke from its RTW range. RTW prices have been raised considerably in the last year or so. With Abercrombie & Fitch moving in next door with its children's range, there is another good reason to avoid that end of the Row.
