Without wishing to offend anyone, I find the whole concept of 'geezer' troubling: like 'The Last Night Of The Proms', books about the Krays, 'The Italian Job' and sweaty men clustered in pub doorways blowing smoke. 'Rumpled' is a put-down, I know, but there are alternative paths to stroll along. The interview on 'The Syllabus' with Zachary was key for me, at the age I am: 'nothing high or tight' (I hope I'm not misquoting him). I saw the way Paul Simons was dressed last week, and there was nothing even vaguely 'rumpled' about him: Madras shirt, jeans, dark socks, loafers. Like his Dad, he looked the biz. In fact, the phrase 'The Simplicity Of The Ivy Look' keeps popping into my head. Simplicity, however, that is based upon thought and experiment - and yet more thought.
What's wrong with 'The Italian Job' worthy alone for the Quincy Jones sound track. I actually think it is the last film that Caine looked good in.
I recall trying to play with this construct with Mr. Kingstonian a little not too long ago... 'Search' might bring it up here.
It was more Showbiz/Mohair/Motown, I think.
'Sunday Best' & 'Best Bib & Tucker' too.
'New England Slob' is what I've realised my own Ivy actually is & has been for years. New England Slob in Paris.
... The pills, the booze, the works of John Cheever...
N.E.S. - Just say yes !
I shall now go and lean out of my one of my floor to ceiling Georgian windows (still with the original wavy glass) & have a ciggie - And if I should topple, remember this of me - ... Dunno, something...
Edith,or Andy or Jimmy or whoever you are
What’s troubling about “Geezer ivy”? And what do we mean by Geezer? working class.
I am a 40 something man living in a nice middle class suburb with a nice family, house and car but I was brought
Up on a council estate in south London. Do I love Ivy clothing? Yes. Am I still a Geezer?
Well, step on my toes in a pub and you will find out (obviously you would have the opportunity to apologise first).
Where do we think the bods in the sixties dressing in Ivy came from Knightsbridge? They were working class London boys ”Geezers”.
Kind Regards
'Ello !
I'm not Edith or Andy - But you can always call me by my Jewish name, David, though. It's always an option.
I can fit Geezer Ivy into my own little Madras rainbow with ease. What do I care ?
Your conversation needs to be with Ms. Edith I think.
Best -
I don't think that this was meant to be anti-working-class...
My problem with your 'Kingstonian' and your 'Armchaired' is their instinct for aggression. That knee-jerk 'don't fuck with me son I'm a bit tasty' bollocks is tired old schtick you should leave behind when you leave your 20s. Grow up geezers it's boring.
Is Geezer really just Camp for Straight blokes ?
Serious question.
All those highly mannered exaggerations just like a fan dancer wielding a Donkey Jacket instead of Ostrich plumes...
(I really must ring my mother...)
^ Small time actor rather than geezer IMO. Does appear in dreadful TV shows and plays up/exaggerates his London 'street cred'.
Most people regard him as a numpty.
Hmmmmmmm - But you are one & one of the better ones.
Kingy lives out by Bentalls now. Nothing wrong with that, but you couldn't call it London.
...We only ever went down that way to nick stuff.
Or work/shop at the Ivy Shop !
