This place is terrible. When I read your post the first time, I was not really convinced. I still think it looks a bit odd BUT on the other hand.... If it does not turn out well, you end up looking like an Amish woman. But these things have something about them.

They make me think of Serpico, Good movie but I wouldn't wear one.

The biggest problem with stuff like this is, you look either (if worn like it was meant to be) like a complete idiot (if not attending a costume party) or like (when worn like a bucket hat) a fat middle European tourist in too tight shorts and sandals with socks... Don't get me wrong, I always liked those Navy hats, but they are not looking too good if you aren't in the Navy. I had one in olive when I was a young teen, I loved it - but it looked hilarious...

I love hats, but I wouldn't wear it.

Thankfully, total sun block can enable one to dispense with such hats. Okay for the beach, but nowhere else, most definitely not around town.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

Au contraire, au contraire. smile

Love em. I love those stills from the Serpico movie- i like the picture on the left. Very cool. With the picture on the right, he`s looking a bit more of a plum.

Personally,  i see these as looking less like the hats of amish ladies and more like the cloche hats of 1920s flappers. It seems that the brim of these hats can vary. Some of those brims are more flared than others.

I think film characterisation, including wardrobe, can be very interesting.
I am aware of this movie, but haven`t seen it. I think the hat , maybe, lends the Pacino character an empathetic ingenousness; surrrounded as he is/was by all the crooked cops: clever, very subtle stuff.

The picture on the right makes him look more like a `dupe` archetype . Again, all this stuff would have been great for fleshing out, and rounding out his character, i expect?

These sailor hats pre date WW2, and havve been around forever. I think they would most certainly have been co-opted into that military surplus side of `the look`, during the 1960`s.

It`s interesting , to me, that New York Cop,  Pacino, wears this military surplus hat  and battle fatigue shirt, in a movie that pre-dates De Niro`s New York Taxi Driver, and his adoption of the Vietnam  general issue Tanker Jacket.

I, most certainly, think i `could get away with` wearing these hats... I honestly don`t think it would be that hard.

I think an insight into the the comedy potential for stuff like this is invaluable. You`ve got to play it deadpan and nonchalant, though, in my opinion. Like with Jeff Garet` and the `comedy glasses`. That way lies disarming charm (or not??  hmm)

Only for the very adventurous and inquisitive of mind, perhaps.

For me, these hats need to be dyed  a natural, earthy, deep coffee cream colour. The kind of colour that would go with sage, navy, light grey , maroon, fawn etc.

These will probably  not be for anyone who usually favours  the safer, bland, insipid  llbean accountant look (though i do like their 1912 (?) shorts).` LLbean accountant ivy` man would probably turn his nose down at these. Then again, who gives a fuck about llbean accountant man?

These hats should only be for genuinely creative types, in my humble opinion. Bravado? No, i don`t think so. Just confidence and firm conviction.

I've been thinking this one over.  With sunglasses, might you not end up looking like Jodie Foster in 'Taxi Driver'?

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

I think the KEY , with these, will be in  coffee -dyeing them the perfect, tonal, colour (whatever that is).

I wont know what that perfect, and MOST versatile, shade will need to be till i see the shape and style of the hat.  Possibly, different variations in the style, and texture, would warrant different colour shades (??)

The coffee dyeing colour would, i suppose, start off as an off-white, before going through the earthier, manly, cream , and then , lighter brown shades. I think i`ll want a warm, tonal, earthy, organic, very deep cream colour.

I ordered a few, surplus, @ 7.00 USD. I`m waiting on them , now.

More Gilligan (60s) than Serpico (70s) imo... Had to ditch the one I scored on eBay for a sawbuck due to sizing, but picked up a new one on Etsy the other day. It's mid century beach wear to me; Bob Denver ivy? smile

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

I got these today. I`m very happy with them. They are a good quality cotton hat that can be moulded to any shape your heart desires. In reality, i don`t think i`m so keen on these worn in the  full bucket style. I think they look better with the brim turned up.

They can mould to A LOT of shapes and styles: stingy brim trilby, Robin Hood (front down, one side, only, turned up). Porkpie etcetera, etcetera.....

I ordered 3. I think you have GOT to know your proper hat size (i`m 7 1/4 U.S.).

The look  reminds you of some of those hats that Japanese Cool Cats and Hipsters wear.

I`ll see how i go, i may keep one in white, but i don`t think they`ll need to be `coffee-dyed` for too long -- Off -White`s, Lighter Beige`s, Creams.

I'm looking for something similar but with a slightly wider brim to keep the sun off me neck.

More Oscar Madison than Serpico perhaps...

Well, that's a pity then. But I can assure you that my interest is purely academical and only concerns the hat, not the head. A dummy or random bum from the street would do. wink
