Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

I read the book then saw the film quite recently, as it happens.  I recommend both.  Serpico identified with the counter culture, and was undercover constantly, so his look was late 60s counter culture, which is often regarded as the enemy of ivy, but, as has been said, certain elements fit quite well with the ivy style it displaced.  There is actually an ivy wearing character in Serpico's story; I can't recall his name (and I'm not going to look it up), but as I recall: his style gets a mention in the book, so the film makers extrapolated that into making him a consistent ivy wearer.

YES. I enjoyed that write up J.

I've been coffee dyeing a white polo shirt and found you need a whole lot of coffee only to achieve a subtle colour shift.
I've also done a bucket hat with navy Dylon, it turned out some powdery blue, not the deep navy I was after.

So you may need a few takes, good luck.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

Thanks a lot for the info, Rob.

Yeah, i`m not in a rush, but i do plan to try coffee-dying at least one of these hats, at some point.

I`ve read up a little bit on it, and youtube has some clips... Boiling water and lots of (instant) coffee, eh?

Maybe you should have added some black dye to that nylon navy dye, Rob?

Thank you for letting us know the results in your own case.

I think you might like these hats, Rob. They are flexible enough to mould into numerous shapes, and keep their hold.

I think i like a stingy brim style, with just the back and the sides, at the back,  turned up a little: it strikes me as a (Bing) Crosby-ish ,`50s -ish, golfing hat  style of ivy.

I can see these hats going with merino and/or cotton textured rollneck jumpers, and cardigans; and cotton levi 501s, or chinos.

I really like my own hat with a natural baracuta g9- buttons done up, and medium size frame Rayban Caravans. Possibly worn with, tapered,  Oliver Brown cotton cord jeans (sand)

I've got a Barbour version of that in navy which I wear in the rain if I can't carry an umbrella for some reason.

Isn't tea a better dye than coffee? Coffee doesn't stick to fabrics that well, but tea does? Worth googling I guess.

I almost bought a J Press rain hat myself. The idea of a rain hat and a mac is great, but an umbrella keeps your clothes dry when it rains...

You're really selling it to me, Yuca!  It DOES sound good ( the book). I' ve just had a quick look to see if I could download it on kindle or iBooks , but , alas, its not available for download on those two.

I love anything factual and especially enjoy auto-biographies and biographies.

I may still order the book. Thanks again.

Serpico must have worn hats like that so none of his corrupt colleagues would take him seriously.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

where did you buy them jesmond?

I like my BB bucket hat with ribbon, but I only weat it at the beach or sailing... As a rainhat (with a suit? to the office?) it just seems a touch goofy.

Sailing with Muffster and Kiel? wink

I think the rain hat also works with a rain coat.
