Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

Wish I'd seen that, could've saved myself almost $30 from the '60s vtg I picked up on etsy, and without the discoloration under the band or annoying navy stamp on the underside. How difficult is it to keep that shape? That looks really good! I picked mine up for the beaches in Tel Aliv (leaving next weekend for one full month!) because I didn't want to pack a pricey straw hat in my baggage and have to worry about lugging it all over the country and having it destroyed upon return.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

One more thing:

I think once you've bent it into a shape that you are happy with, it becomes set, in it's shape. In the same way that if you pick up a trilby hat ( for example) , the felt fabric may be soft, but the shape is set. Like trilby hats, these cotton hats should  maintain that earlier set shape, when you first pick them up; wear them; put them down; and , later, put them back on again. I think it's to do with the construction of the different cotton material used for the contrasting brim.

I think these hats are a very 'back to basics' look, and option. That's why I like them.

They strike me as refreshing, free form, and little seen.

Jesmond our man I know that routine, keep kneading them until they're just right.  They're like clay aren't they.

The Day We Caught The Train by Ocean Colour Scene - They all seem to have Dixie Cup Buckets going on. All different colours & styled in different ways.

Best -

I feel like Ray Charles, here...

Can you paint a picture? Are they proper naval issue bucket hats?

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

Flpped through "Take Ivy" this morning. What did I see onPage 29: the guys in front of the boathouse. One of them is sporting a white hat. I would go so far to say it is a sailor hat worn as a bucket hat,

Just to get a repp..

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

Ok.

Yes, he could be...

If you ,repeatedly, turn these hats inside out; when new; you break them in. They look much better as bucket hats, because the brim begins to gradually splay outwards, at an angle. More like a visor, or like bucket hats as we generally appreciate them.

The guy in the Take Ivy pic, MAY, indeed, be wearing an old, much used naval hat. It's difficult to tell from the pic, but the brim, and crown, seem to be of a very similar, contrasting texture to navy issue hats.

Well spotted!
