Re: Olympics fatigue

A summer of rain, then a gap in the clouds

and The Queen jumped from the sky

to the cheering crowds.

We speak Shakespeare here,

a hundred tongues, one-voiced; the moon bronze or silver,

sun gold, from Cardiff to Edinburgh

by way of London Town,

on the Giant's Causeway;

we say we want to be who we truly are,

now, we roar it. Welcome to us.

We've had our pockets picked,

the soft, white hands of bankers,

bold as brass, filching our gold, our silver;

we want it back.

We are Mo Farah lifting the 10,000 metres gold.

We want new running-tracks in his name.

For Jessica Ennis, the same; for the Brownlee brothers,

Rutherford, Ohuruogu, Whitlock, Tweddle,

for every medal earned,

we want school playing fields returned.

Enough of the soundbite abstract nouns,

austerity, policy, legacy, of tightening metaphorical belts;

we got on our real bikes,

for we are Bradley Wiggins,

side-burned, Mod, god;

we are Sir Chris Hoy,

Laura Trott, Victoria Pendleton, Kenny, Hindes,

Clancy, Burke, Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas,

Olympian names.

We want more cycle lanes.

Or we saddled our steed,

or we paddled our own canoe,

or we rowed in an eight or a four or a two;

our names, Glover and Stanning; Baillie and Stott;

Adlington, Ainslie, Wilson, Murray,

Valegro (Dujardin's horse).

We saw what we did. We are Nicola Adams and Jade Jones,

bring on the fighting kids.

We sense new weather.

We are on our marks. We are all in this together.

I am very satisified the way this has turned out for Blighty, I expected abject failure, but I am always pleasantly pleased and surprized when my natural cynicism and pessimism is proved wrong.

Re: Olympics fatigue

Closing ceremony was bizarre. Overly long too.

Has been rock stars revisit their greatest hits, with flashy lighting and stage effects.

Re: Olympics fatigue

It all seemed a bit like a local parade at the small country school I went to.

Pet Shop Boys - mmh what was that about?

Scooters and some Boy Band doing a WHO songs -Pinball Wizard??

George Micheal  seemed to do ok - if I could understand the song.

Ray Davis - needs a stylist - at least for his hair - get a buzz cut , stop dying it or get a sensible wig, stop wearing all black and a white shirt hanging out. Try to get your singing voice up to scratch before a gig - not during it..

Then there was dancing around by everyone involved - cleaners, tuckshop ladies, escorts, sweepers....

Then Annie Lennox did some mildly interesting stuff with pirates and ships whilst singing. Looked ok.

Then we switched off - worried they would drag old Elton John on and make him play piano and song he'd composed for the Olympics, perhaps even bring on Cliff Richard, have they kept John Lennon preserved well enough to wheel him on?????????

Maybe it gets better - I'm not sticking around.

Re: Olympics fatigue

They clearly decided to go out with a whimper.

Kate Bush was advertised as being part of the closing ceremony, but she didn't appear.

No Elgar? Bah humbug!

Re: Olympics fatigue

Good it's over!

Now everyone can get back to wasting less money elsewhere.

Or wasting more maybe? You know in all those countries with few take home medals, there's going to be cries to spend (sorry waste) more tax money on athletic training. Gotta keep up with the Jones you know

Re: Olympics fatigue

Didn't watch the closing but just read a story moments ago that there were parading super models. Story rants on about the message sent by so called overly thin fake women who have nothing to do with the olympics and real women (athletes).  Lets's tally up the score:

                                 Fake women (super model)                                          Real women (athlete)
beautiful to look at                         1                                                                            0
will gain weight when stop                1                                                                            0
insane training
pay lots of taxes                            1                                                                            0
whiny beggers*                             1                                                                            -1
do drugs (who really cares)           -1                                                                           -1
lie about drug use                           1                                                                           -1
who you would like to be with          1                                                                            -1

total                                             5                                                                               -4

Supermodels win by a landslide
