I can still remember the first time I saw this lot..supporting The Truth at the Boston Arms in Tufnell Park one wintry night in early '84 I think (I'd been oop north to look at Bradford University which was snowed up and I was thankful I was in Monkey Boots... but I digress..)...
It was a hardcore Mod crowd and this lot came on initially to a fair bit of derision but they blew EVERYONE in there away..I pretty much went to every gig afterwards in the London area and as previously mentioned I think, along with The Prisoners, they were my only modern outlet in the mid 80s and for a lot of us who were left unmoved by the Style Council etc.
Their "Live at the Marquee" album was a chart hit I recall but their second studio album a bit of a mare due to some woeful 80s production...the best thing they put to vinyl was a Marquee freebie of Chamber Door - anyone who likes a bit of psyche should really try and dig up a copy for t'is wondrous!
I've some other great titbits courtesy of old cassette demos via a mate where songs like Cardinal Charlotte's Memorial School were unlike anything I'd ever heard at that point...a fookin marvelous band indeed if only very shortlived!! One of the best live turns ever for me personally...

...another example of a "less is more" approach, the 100 sec song, so this also "too much!" at the same time:

"I just wanna buy some strings, you gawddam..."
I agree with Saint Warren that it's definitely better than 99% of modern band schtick...
Anyone here seen at least one of their comback shows on that tour with the Gories?

Billy Miller: "Today marks the 50th anniversary of the day the cowardly Beatles had manager Brian Epstein throw Pete Best out of the band."
