I sense TI is on the way to become an authority on "Dixie cup hats". In this discussion, among other things, they dyeing of white hats/uniforms with coffee is mentioned a few times.

Yeah, Axelist, I think that's where I read of the coffee dyeing, and blue dyeing practise during WW2.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

I bumped into a friend at the beach, today.

He complimented me on my (dyed) hat. More specifically: " I like your hat -Where did you get it ...?"

I'm giving him a new hat, and my youngest brother is over here at the moment. He's got a new hat now, as well.

It's funny , but, looking at my brother wearing his hat, I was associating these hats being worn by those rich American Jews, who we're ex- WW2 servicemen; and who came from the East Coast: Chicago, New York; but who vacationed in, and later built up, Miami, Florida, in the 1950's.

Maybe, it's only romantic perception on my part.

But, if such a connection existed, in reality, I think it would only make the aesthetic, cultural , historical and creative associations with this hat, richer and more interesting.

I'll be wearing one of these tomorrow for a 50th birthday (not enamoured of the fancy dress idea, guy should grow up).

Full disclosure: Not a genuine USN hat. More of the top half of a Chinese 'Sailor Girl Disguise Kit' from my local one Euro shop. But a perfect fit.

It's not a good look IMO..........best left for fancy dress parties.

Re: United States Navy 'Dixie Cup', GOB , Bucket Hats

After two years of dixie-cupping, I have to admit I don't wear them that often. The problem is that the brim is "cylindric" as one can see in my pic earlier in this thread. Without the brim being folded Fedor-like, it is very close to the head.

But it was a nice little project, nevertheless.

Moose, please let me know if there are lots of "Sailor Moon"-ladies at the party. I'll be there in no time. With my dixie cup and a first mate's whistle.

OCD?  I don't know about that.  Jesmond was a fine poster, who was (I'm fairly certain) already active on here by the time I joined in 2008.  He was a true original, nobody's fool, just bought and wore what he liked.  That was Jesmond.

If you dig back in that thread there’s a long discourse about dyeing these hats (that made people look like the village idiot) with coffee and other substances. It was indicative of enthusiasm, but quite funny.
