The dilemma of dressing in August

August, in our temperate climate, seems to be one of those transitional months that challenges even the most complete wardrobe – and my own is a long way from that!

As I look out of my office window the trees are subtly changing colour and this morning there has been a distinct ‘nip’ in the air.  Last weekend though the temperature reached 32.4 degrees C (over 90 F) just up the road in Suffolk.

Yesterday, I visited one of the few remaining decent stores in the East of England to top up on Trumper’s shaving cream and found time to inspect some of new autumn arrivals from Ralph Lauren, Barbour and so on.  The shop assistants had already ‘crossed over’ into autumn clothes.  Although my own clothes were not really summery I was left with that vague feeling that it was time to move on.

The coming weekend is late summer Bank Holiday in England and that provides a kind of watershed I suppose but early September often sees afternoon temperatures in the 80s....

Dressing for business does not cause too many issues, of course, but for more casual occasions all the above can make things a bit taxing. What do you chaps do?

Re: The dilemma of dressing in August

Hailing from the Wirral, August was always a month with a tinge of Autumn with cooler evenings and breezes coming in from the river Dee and Mersey. There was always the exceptionally hot day and some of these were on the bank holiday by chance and I remember the Roodee once relaxing their dress code in the County Stand during an August meet it was that hot.

September can be a gorgeous month in England when it is sunny for days on end and not too hot, fine weather for a blazer and light jacket. Autumn at its most golden.

Now I am in the Netherlands, I find the summer peaks throughout August and even September and the beginning of October can be full on summer weather.....some years.

I relax dress code in work down to chinos and a shirt, a summer weight jacket if there's a bit of wind. A madras tie if there is a meeting I feel the need for something slightly formal for. I will stay like this until the weather noticeably changes and then its back to shirt, tie and jacket.

Outside of work 'tis the season of chinos, occasional shorts, polo shirts and madras shirts. But the dilemma will come at the end of September when the weather can be hot one moment and then a cooler wind blowing the next, or summer sun and then a rainy afternoon.

Re: The dilemma of dressing in August

^^^ This is the one time of the year where Chicago has its advantages.  By mid-August, it is generally quite cool here at night and remains comfortable (certainly bearable for summer) during the day.  We will get a day here or there where the temperature is elevated and somewhat unpleasant--the next few days are supposed to be that way--but it is almost perfect.  Jacket and tie are just fine, even pleasant in the early a.m to midday, and the breeze and sunshine gives everything a halcyon glow.  Don't worry, we shall pay for this in few months, but now is certainly our time.

Re: The dilemma of dressing in August

The forecast is around 20 degrees C tops for the Bank Holiday weekend. During the day, (like 4F Hepcat), I will relax in a polo shirt, twill shorts and deck shoes. In the evening, I tend to change into a plain or striped poplin shirt, chinos and loafers (plus an Irish linen sports jacket if dining out). If the weather is a bit cooler, a rugby/Oxford shirt with 5 pocket jeans (twill or canvas but not denim) and heavier deck shoes work well.

I'm not sure there are any 'Ivy' brands out there anymore apart from JS, Van Jac, and of course places like the Andover Shop, and O'Connels own brands, after to that you are into individual garments that have hopefully maintained some quality from various companies like Mercer, but Brooks, RL, Gant, probably in my mind are all considered to be Preppy. Most knitwear over stateside is as you well know sourced here, so why not go to the source yourself. I agree to all that.
