Aye there is lot to take in, but i can't really say what's right until i try it on myself i've heard for and against on the placket being 3 or 4 and pocket placement etc. I think it's best i buy a few and see what i like.

The infamous Miles Davis Milestones shirt was a 4 button half placket though, wasn't it?

I guess it does defeat the point if tucked in....but I'd wear that beauty untucked I think.

FWIW I love my Mercers. With my Ivy rise chinos, the bottom of the placket is a couple of inches above the waistband, still visibly a pullover, but subtle enough that I can wear a tie with it, which would also have been an option with the old Brooks pullover shirts.

I like the shorter-placket popovers in a sporty way; they looked good untucked, and I think they look better as short sleeve shirts, almost like polo shirts that are woven instead of knit.

I imagine the 5 button today serves the same purpose as the 4 button did in the past. Like Zach said the 4 button sits (taking his word for that as I don;t own any popovers) just above his waist band. The 5 button would sit just above a modern waist band. Trouble is we don't like modern waist bands so a 5 button really would just look like an ordinary shirt.

It's a lovely stripe. I think Bop has a vintage Brooks with a very similar stripe.

I think zach is right if i were going to get them made i would go for the shorter placket, short sleeved style. In madras, more pop over than pull over, but i've still gotta find, 'the one'

An other idea is to look for a vintage sewing pattern? McCalls, Simplicity, Butterick...

Actually, I like the idea. I am not a great vintage buyer anymore and new popovers are hard to get.

The JS ones are great!

If you go for the longer placket pullover style, check Mercer!

And if that's all too expensive, I'm sure you'll find lots of popover-bds on ebay or in etsy shops etc... Troy SMG and other very good vintage ones can, of course, also be quite expensive if many people have found them and bid on them...
