I'm a big fan of Martin Denny and exotica in general. Quiet Village is a favourite from many years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDr01eVrHIQ&feature=list_other&playnext=1&list=AL94UKMTqg-9BTEdYDj82_dv7HEZTUg5fq
No one I know has the slightest interest in Exotica - or knows what it is - yet when I'm alone with the good stereo I almost always tune into SOMA Illinois Street Lounge on the Internet radio through my digital radio hooked up to a good amp and speakers. http://somafm.com/illstreet/played
To some extent its background music but I enjoy versions of old popular songs and the influence of latin beats is striking. The music mostly swings more than most music that pretends to greater things and it has a playful sense of humour.
Try it - if you dare.
yeah, it's nice fxh, less full on and cerebral as some jazz, just like you s(w)ay, swinging background music.
From the decade that bought you platform shoes with fish in the heels.

I dig 'exotica' too, its really latin lounge music 40 years before the first lounge music CD's came out. Kind of kitsch too, but in a good way, like fxh and Bop says it's playful, doesn't take itself too seriously and is fun. What's not to like?
This kid from New Orleans has got it..

What do youse blokes listen on anyway? - crappy computer speakers or headphones or ear buds or good amp and proper quality speakers in stereo?
I'm a Clear Audio turntable man myself, then it starts to go down hill into NAD's and equivalent. Would really like a decent amp, that's the next hi-fi equipment purchase....eventually. Headphones are Ultrasone Pro750's, which I have to wear a lot on account of the family who are avid television watchers.
Forgot how amazingly good and eclectic this band was:
