Advice Needed: Tie to match with blue glencheck jacket

Ive recently bought a light blue glencheck (with red overcheck) sportjacket and wondered what kind of ties I could combine with this sort of jacket. theres obviously quite a lot going on already with a glencheck so im finding it a little tricky to find a good combination. if it helps the wool is a super 130s. light/medium weight wool.

i usually wear regimental stripes, but think this might be throwing too much together with the jacket .. would a solid navy blue or red silk tie work better?

You might be asking the wrong man. Last night I wore a pale and yet bright pink cotton jacket and liberty print shirt with charcoal trousers.

Can we see the jacket?

I never really care if the tie goes with the jacket except to try to avoid the tie ground color matching the jacket's. It depends more on if I want to blend in or stand out. It amazes me that any man today would be concerned with matching. I believe that color types are more important than color combinations.

Re: Advice Needed: Tie to match with blue glencheck jacket

i wish i could upload a picture to make it easier but unfortunately my digital camera is on the blink at the moment ...its essentially a sportscoat with a classic light blue glencheck (made up of light blue & black lines, with a thin red overcheck) .. when i get the camera up and running i will attempt to upload an image.

i see what you mean about the ground colour of the tie not matching a jacket .. ive always believed a tie should stand out, my logic being that a mans dress is usually made up of sombre colours so a tie and polished shoes should be two things that can add character to an outfit ..

interstingly i read an article by micheal drake, of drakes, who said he doesnt like shiny ties (& made a rather amusing reference to not wanting to look like you got of the boat from naples) .. i always thought the shinier the better .. but maybe i should re-evaluate this? youre amazed that men would think about tie & jacket combinations? guess most men dont wear ties anymore so this is unsurprising, however i like to wear one even in the evenings on a night out & if im out at weekends with friends, makes me feel less like a greek waiter with off putting hair pouring out over my shirt smile

I would say there are two approaches, the considered, and the 'try everything till it works' method.

The last one calls for you to to get all your ties out, and lay them on the jacket one by one till something works, if nothing works, continue this practice somewhere where they sell ties. Any salesmen that enjoys their job will be more than willing to help.

The considered and informed approach can help you narrow an idea down, but it won't make something just work magically, you'll still be at the mercy of serendipity.

For someone that has really looked into the matter I'd say trying everything is the best method. Only rule to consider is uniformity and contrast in an outfit is what makes it interesting, and the more subtle the contrast, the more tasteful it looks.

of course clothing and choices you make when dressing personal taste, i like your suggestion of just experimenting OFB, i'll just take the jacket with me next time im looking for ties and just hold them up.. ofcourse film noir is right, clothing is (or should) reflect your own personal taste. however, personal taste can only operate within certain boundaries, set by context of the clothing you are wearing. An example, for me if i was wearing a double breasted blazer with gold buttons, it would suggest perhaps a nautical/military context due to the historical origins of this jacket, i would not then pair this with lets say a tartan wool knitted tie , even if i liked the tie, as i would think this is more suggestive of country pursuits.
