The reasons posited for Republican V.P. hopeful Paul Ryan's oversized suits have run the gamut from simple weight loss to a cunning plan to play Joe the Plumber card as Bill Buys from T. Maxx. Any thoughts on the real reason?

Even the most mendicant of the English understand the concept of gentleman, suit, well-cut, dandy. For the majority of Americans these terms are not only alien, they are terrifying.
Ryan is probably pandering to his demographic which is not his demographic and thus he probably has to over do the people of Walmart look. The USA is in the throws of a lot of panic attacks over identity.
We worship old money but do not recognize the concept of gentleman. We love clothes but fear anyone with innate or superior knowledge on the subject, unless it can be bought. We pretend we have no classes and yet we have obvious class warfare. Clothing doesnt matter and yet it matters a whole lot.
Isn't that what they all wear? It's a hangover from the broad-shouldered armani suit days of the 80s, the last time there was a general and wide-spread fashion consciousness among American men. That's how they all dress---shoulders too big, the suit pants puddling around the sneakers, no tie. At least he's probably wearing socks even though it will cost him the iGent vote.

I'd actually vote for them if they still dressed like this! The 80's wasn't too bad for Classic British was it?
I get treated at the largest private hospital in the Southern Hemisphere and it is notable that few specialists actually dress with collar and tie when visiting patients. I prefer my specialists to look successful as it gives me some confidence in his/her ability. Many look like they shop at a discount store and I don't mean the gentlemen selling their wares here.
You want your physician in a tie and your surgeon in a bow tie or open necked shirt - as chevy says long ties flop about and carry bugs. You want them to look clean of shirt and cloth and hands. You don't want a tv show "genius" or someone who does "heroic" surgery. And its not a superhero game - its a team game - more like flying an airline - you want a good plane, good maintenance crew back home, good flight plan, good weather, plenty of fuel and a good crew - the Capitan is just the leader of the flight, important but not everything.
