I would like to start wearing glasses again as I'm not convinced that daily contact lens use is so good for my eyes.
I want plastic or shell frames rather than metal, but to date my experiences with these have been unhappy because (a) they always slip down my nose, (b) they look wonky (I think one ear is higher than the other) and (c) the arms rapidly bend completely out of place and can't be bent back.
But it seems to me that none of these problems is impossible to solve if I bought a better frame and/or went to a better optician.
Does anyone have any recommendations (in London) please?
This firm in Covent Garden, which sells frames made in England, should be able to help you.

I'm not the only one here to have dealt with VIC - he is very helpful about any queries.

If you know your sizes and now what glasses shape works for you, then I can recommend ordering direct from Shuron and Allyn Scura in the US.
Thanks for the tips everyone. Trouble is I don't know my sizes and what shapes work for me. I've had all shapes in the past and I'm not really happy with any of them. Maybe it's different in other countries, but in the UK glasses retail is still pretty Stone Age. You just stand in front of a mirror putting on pair after pair and the sales person will tell you that they all look great.
ha - here in most places its worse than that - young Chinese girls in specs shops will tell you anything is "cool" and try to sell you a pair of plastic black rimmed hipster glasses made for an asian nose. And I've got a honk like Jimmy Durante.
Does anyone have any good ideas for rimless glasses - I would prefer something kind of preppy looking.

There's been a trend away from rimless glasses, back to the nerdy thick tortoise shell look, which I too have adopted.
I was very much into Air Titanium throughout the 90s, but then they got greedy and started charging 20K plus to opticians to have the privilege of stocking their samples and ordering from them, so sources of them dried up. Also Oliver People's, but they are relatively expensive when compared with Shuron's and other manufacturers.
At least there are trends in glasses now, much better than in the mid-80s. No wonder I wore contacts for a decade non-stop.
As a surgeon, I loved the rimless trifocal titanium frames. Completely unobstructed field of view. Many a time I jumped into the shower forgetting I had glasses on. However, I got tired of the the high price ripoff.
I now have tortoise shell large frames because when wearing trifocals you need a large frame, unless you love headaches from constantly adjusting your focus. So the frame is heavy, and you always feel it.
Large thick frames do have one advantage, and it is that they hide the sunken area between the infraorbital rim (bottom of lower eyelid) and upper cheek, a key visual cue of the aging face.
Does anyone know the price on the Shruon Regis II? Just curious as to what I am getting myself into.
Chevere makes good points. Rimless glasses are great for non-contact sports, e.g. golf.
