Charleston - Bloomsbury Group Bohemia

Bohemia is not a place - it's a state of mind.  A commitment to live with your own sense of values, your own freedom and independence.  This video gives an insight into the values of the Bloomsbury Group (Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, Maynard Keynes, EM Forster, Duncan Grant to name but a few) some of whom lived at Charleston.

They lived and breathed art - whether that be through the medium of painting, sculpting, writing - and they challenged societal norms and the philosophy of materialism. Charleston a simple rented farmhouse near Firle, East Sussex, UK, provided a place to create these various forms of art and live with a freedom not possible in the City. It is impossible to capture the old world creative atmosphere of being at Charleston but this video gives some of the feeling of the raw creativity that engulfs you as you enter and walk around.

Thanks for posting that, I've never really connected with the Bloomsbury Group, always seemed somewhat stuffy and arts and crafty for me liking. I always supposed the American equivalent of this group, was the Beats. Later, more inspired by jazz and a different American vibe.

Hepcat - interesting that you found them stuffy as they seemed very avant garde to me. There personal lives were full of outrageous behaviour going against the Victorian stiffness they were brought up in.

For example Vanessa Bell (who lived in Charleston) was married to Clive Bell but had an affair with Duncan Grant (who also lived in the house) they then had a child (Angelica) who was raised as Clive Bell's daughter even though all the parties involved and all the Bloomsbury set knew the truth. They all shared the house together for many creative years. Note Duncan Grant was bisexual and also brought home all sorts of people. However through all this the group stayed together and Vanessa and Duncan had a relationship for over 40 years at Charleston.

Re: Charleston - Bloomsbury Group Bohemia

I always thought of them as legend in their own mind types, and a shadow precious for my taste.
