Kangaroo stuck in Melbourne Airport carpark

http://www.3aw.com.au/blogs/breaking-news-blog/kangaroo-stuck-in-melbourne-airport-carpark/20121022-280a9.html

There was an even more bizarre case (6 months ago) when a person was driving their car and a Kangaroo jumped in the front seat and went along for the ride.

Re: Kangaroo stuck in Melbourne Airport carpark

We've had a couple of similar cases in which mountain lions turned up on the grounds of shopping malls miles from the mountains here in Southern California. In both cases, sad to say, the lions were shot. However, both mountain lions and bears are having population explosions in this state and turning up in urban areas with increasing frequency. Coyotes (prairie wolves) are all over the cities in much of the country. Not far from here, they are frequently encountered lounging by swimming pools (seriously!).

Don't talk about possums and we saw a koala and joey (baby koala) on its mother's back yesterday taking a walk in the local park.

Re: Kangaroo stuck in Melbourne Airport carpark

l remember me and a mate were in the bush picking weeds only 5 minutes from my house. We turned around and there's at least 70+ BIG grey kangaroos looking at us and many were about 7 foot tall. These Roos were sitting up like Meerkats staring at us. lt was really bizarre....an entire paddock full, and possibly over 100 of the buggers. l sometimes go to that area with a camera to see if l see them there again, but l only see a handful in that paddock. Hopefully i'll see them all sitting there again one of these days.

On the weekends when l meditate in the park there is also this snake that always watches me. He is only 6 foot away and he is often under this log covered in grass. l haven't seen him yet, but l do know he is there. l  know it's a snake because when he moves all the grass moves. From the movement of the grass l would say he's about 6 or 7 foot long. He minds his own business and l mind my own business, but l bet he keeps his eye on me. He knows me well by now.

Re: Kangaroo stuck in Melbourne Airport carpark

Interesting, Shooey, that you should bring up a mountain lion in Oz. I've heard a lot of these reports, but nothing substantive ever turns up. I find it very hard to believe that American troops would be able lug mountains lions about during WWII, although there was a Free Polish unit that had a Syrian Brown Bear that went with them as a mascot and actually packed ammunition around for them in Italy. Getting back to Oz, there has been an interesting micro-evolution of feral domestic cats, some of which are attaining huge sizes, e.g., 60 pounds. While we're on it, Shooey, do you have any views about the Yowie (Australia's Sasquatch)?

As to the explosion of predators in California, mountain lions have been protected for over 40 years and their population has increased tenfold. The only natural predator of the mountain lion is the wolf, which we had exterminated in California by the early 1920s. With black bears, their population increase has been mostly due to lack of hunting pressure (recently abetted by the legislature, which just banned hound hunting for them) and also their claiming a lot of territory formerly occupied exclusively by the now-extinct California Grizzly.

That's a great insight Captain. Thanks. I really didn't expect such an insight on a clothing forum.

Do you have a background in Conservation, if you don;t mind me asking?
