"A better questions is in a world and at a time when everyone is spending more on clothes than ever before, why does everyone look both so bad and so similar?"
Prices are higher due to "quantitative easing", i.e. inflationary monetary policies, around the globe. Quality and styling, in general, is poorer. I would also guess is that most people are afraid to stand out from the crowd. Employers can no longer enforce dress codes and it's amazing how many London executives, even in the City, now dress casually.
l'm currently watching the video at the moment and enjoying it.
Here is a much better video called `how luxury lost it's luster':

As some of the big name houses have said, `it's not the quality or luxury that's important for the masses, it's the perception of luxury that's important'. Basically, the masses want to feel special and important because they know they aren't any of those things, so giving visual clues out to the public via big name brands is important to them because it makes them feel special. Perception is an incredible concept.
Even 15 years ago the shoes from the top fashion houses were o.k, but now most of the shoes are all glued and made from cheap leathers. l saw some Versace shoes recently and they were $100 shoes posing as $500 shoes. The same with the clothes at Gucci in Oz...must be only mid level because the fabrics are all rough and cheap looking....no luxury about them, and l have noticed their shoes have taken a sharp decline towards sneak type models now with no dress shoes.
LOL at A&F.
The sneaker companies may pay millions a year to advertise, but it still doesn't change the fact that people look like losers when they wear sneakers outside of sporting activities. And all the `Surgical appliance' spammers, baseball cap wearers and overweight drug dealers don't help improve the loser image.
