Formal menswear is easy, one can master it with relatively quickly...And, if you have the resources one can do it well in a snap. The odd jacket and trousers can be a little tricky at times but not too bad, and full suiting is a joke compared to street wear or women's styling.

Assuming you are not trying to achieve a country look:
A full suit (usually navy or grey) + pale colour shirt (pale blues, pinks, less often white) + tie + pocket square...

Out of this simple formula the colours, textures, patterns are the main issues. If you get textures, patterns, colours down you are a good dresser. Other than that it is simple rules that are arbitrary anyways--anyone can pick them up once they find out the rules.

The hardest thing is fit and maybe pattern matching...colours and patterns can be figured out by looking around and seeing how others do it. This becomes amazingly easy if you just have the cash to dump on a helpful tailor and, if clueless, a stylist--and I have colleagues who have hired stylists. After that the uniform is complete, the 'amazing mystery' of the well dressed gentleman solved. Mind you, business dress is even easier because you don't have to mix too many patterns, being plain is still considered elegant and 'minimalist'.

Women's styles and trends--Jesus Christ that is hard...most do not understand how to do all sorts of things well, that is a trivial pt.

For instance, that mohair suit that is posted as an example--toddlers could figure out that combination and then order it...it is not only uninspiring but it is flat out drab, but some would call that well dressed--and if you are a man it would be decent...Why? Menswear is luckily easy.

Anyone who says, 'people don't understand x or y' implies they do in fact know...In what world, other than on your own forum, would a guy who considers a blue suit, white shirt and red tie worthy of an article be deemed as a good arbiter of women's fashion?
