So I'm channel surfing a few months ago and who do I see but our old pal RJ_Man on an entertainment show, wearing a natty grey jacket, a black turtleneck sweater, a pink pocket square and a smile like a Cheshire cat. The East Coast's answer to Beau Brummell wearing a turtleneck has lead me to reconsider my view on them. Previously I regarded turtlenecks as fit only for beatniks and wattled older gents, but RJ_Man sported his (I think it was cashmere) with panache.
Now, I'm not sure I go along with the view that a turtlenck is a rebellion against the tie nor do I agree with this from Esquire "the turtleneck was the boldest of all the affronts to the status quo. It was the picture of masculine poise and arrogance, redolent of athletes, sportsmen, even U-boat commanders. The simplicity of its design made neckties seem fussy and superfluous by comparison". Nevertheless Mr Snark did look rather elegant, in a casual sort of way.
Alas, he was bested on the show by a tie-wearing student of his own profession, wearing a jacket which surely must have been thrifted.
I have never owned or worn a turtle-neck sweater, mostly because I never thought one would complement my face very well. Besides, who wants to look like a turtle?
But, then, I don't care much for sweaters in general.
I never wear a sweater to work, or when going out, but do around the house or around my property. I have not seen turtleneck sweaters in local stores for may years.
Now that the weather is finally cooling down, I'm wondering where you guys get cute women's or unisex winter-weight sweaters and cardigans?
