Benny Hill
After seeing Gangnam style, it struck me it would be ripe for the Benny Hill treatment.
The irascible oriental who cannot pronounce the letter 'r'. His verbal gags get overlooked in favour of the silent chases that appeal to a global audience. You cannot beat well-executed comedy cliches.

It is unfortunate that Mr Hill is remembered so much more for the dolly birds and so much less for his masterful comic wordplay.

Benny was good and daring for the day, but whenever l have come across his stuff in the last 20 years all l wanna do is turn the bleeding rubbish off. One of the most boring comedians on t.v.

Hill was a brilliant visual comedian. A master.

He's sadly banished from TV in Britain now.

I believe Benny Hill took his name from Jack Benny, from whom he had been known to steal skits and bring them back to Britain.

When I worked at Thames TV at Teddington (Just after I'd left The Ivy Shop) I'd drink with Bob Todd & Little Jackie in the Thames Bar... Saw Benny a few times, but not up close. He was a major international star... And then overnight...
Later I graduated to Thames on The Euston Road in London... Roger Bolton held the meeting to close down our department... He had these very distinctive 'chopping' hand movements as he talked, of which he was fully aware, even quipping 'Let's have a change of hand' part way through - Rather like Larry Grayson saying 'Let's have a change of scenery' as he'd switch the chair he used to bring on stage with him for company from one side to the other...
"Which hand do you use when you're telling the truth, Roger?' One wag called out.
Roger just shrugged and started to use both as he carried on talking...
Thatcher killed Thames TV in revenge for 'Death On The Rock' of course... No amount of department closing could save it. Roger and I still carried on making money, but together no more. When I later moved flat to Westminster I'd see him walking down from Channel Four just by the Discount Shoe place & I'd always nod at him. He never failed to look amused by my random popping up out of the gloom... Not seen him for over a decade now...

All TV companies had to re-apply for their own fancises under a new Government bill back then. Thames lost theirs.
Same deal with Oracle Teletext & me a few years later. Oracle got stitched up too... But in a different way...
I worked in the Oil Industry oir a few years after that just to fill up the old oak chest and then moved to the BBC...
For a while.

Benny Hill was the guilty pleasure of some of my mates and me in the 80s. To me he appeared like a big child. A lot of his play with words and puns got lost in translation, I fear. I alwys liked it when that special melody was played and the chase which was part of each show begun. Rather harmless and silly fun, I think. I also liked the way he sometimes saluted.
What was the name of the little fellow who always got tapped on his head?
Damn, now I can't get this tune out of my head.
