Dear Bastard on Duty ("I've got the conch!"),
if we were to have a band do our theme song, who would it be?
I'd like to nominate Shane McGowan at his worst.
Thank you.

It's never too early to begin Christmas shopping for your favourite close and personal friends on BBR.

The ones toward the bottom for those on a budget.
Random thoughts:
Seidensticker is a legend. Another one: Donald Keene.
No such thing as a "Nobel Prize-winning translation" as the literary prize is awarded to the individual author. (Although to be fair Kawabata's was awarded largely on the strength of the translation you cite.)
Lord Hillyer=huge bastard
I don't know who we should get to sing the Bastards' theme song, but can we get Phil Spector to produce?

Oh, and another vote for Anchor Steam. Good beer.
Does this make me more or less of a bastard?

LOL
^^They should really lock that as no one seems capable of carrying on the legacy.
When I die, instead of donating my brain to science, I should donate the "Pics" folder on my hard drive to Twin Six. (Except you're a little older, buddy, so stay healthy. I'll speed up the process through poor diet/stress/no sleep/etc., LOL.)
"Fetish" is not what we're about though....I prefer to be known as a connoisseur.
^^Yeah, but -- the Swiss and Germans know English better than most Americans.
It's interesting question to what degree a translation plays a part in the Noble Prize. After all, props to the Swedes for their language skills, but how you judge the Russian and the Chinese and the Polish if you're not fluent in those languages, and especially for the poetry, if you're not learned with the whole poetic tradition of that language, it would seem to be difficult to judge the merits of a writer. Of course I'm sure there are good Russo-philes in Sweden and whatnot.

On Duty. Taking questions.
Dear BoD,
How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?
