Should I wear a watch or do a Cameron?

My wristwatch has recently broken .. second time this has happened with a reasonably priced automatic wristwatch ~£500 so not talking rolex / patek etc prices. Ive been quoted a price to have it repaired but am considering instead not to wear a wristwatch at all from now on.

I carry a small mobile phone with me which has the time displayed on the front (a v low key nokia). i think the trend to wear a watch on the wrist is a relatively recent one, perhaps post war and now we all have the time on our cell phones the usefulness of keeping a wristwatch may have passed. I must confess that feeding into my decision is the whole issue of a watch becoming a 'status measuring' object, rather than a 'time measuring' one, which means many people seem to check your watch to decide where you fit into the pecking order of society. I was always taught that an elegant man wears a watch discretely anyway, therefore wears one which is small & thin and doesnt have swiss brands names emblazoned on the dial for all to see .. with the current trend to use one as a status symbol most watch brands now seem to make these huge beasts which men lug on their wrists like some sort of medievel duelling weapon wink I used to work in a city brokerage and this whole phenommenon had reached ridicuolous proportions where the bigger and more obviously expensive the better .. the result were gaudy rolexes, hublots & panarais a particular favourite! I find this distasteful so am considering 'opting out' of the system by just not wearing a watch at all (they may look .. but therell be a bare wrist lol). Additionally it means I wont have to worry about were to store it safely when at the gym, swimming or on the beach on holiday. Additionally there should be further cost savings from not having to shell out for outrageous watch servicing expenses and/or repairs.

I have the money to buy into this whole cultural phenommenon if I wished (and my other half asked if I wanted to replace my current watch with a more expensive watch, not that shes an expert on mens watches or anything apart from looking at various ones in a jewellers window) but to be honest Id rather spend the money on good tailoring and shoes, as well as perhaps going out in the evenings & travelling which is a passion of mine.

Heres an article on David Cameron choosing not to wear a watch (or any other jewellry inc a wedding ring).

Id be interested to hear your thoughts?

Re: Should I wear a watch or do a Cameron?

I have just gone back to watches after twenty years, so much simpler than digging a mobile out of the pocket for a quick time check.   I like them as a wardrobe addition.  I've gone for Mondaine as an event, dress watch purely for the design, an original G10 CWC military watch for regular wear and a cheaper clone MWC for around the house (so that if it gets scratched or knocked it won't matter).   I'm after a Timefactors Precista in a month or so, then I'm happy.   I like the simple black face of a military watch, the simpler the better on the face as all I use it for it time checks.   I find these look discrete and distinctive.   The military watches are on NATO straps so look really effective as a distinctive look at a modest price.   These days all watches are basically reliable so it's about the look for me.

I find that people that wear an expensive watch to indicate class/status are vulgar and crass. I have a Timex watch that cost me £20 and a swatch that cost me £50. They look good and work fine. I also like the Military watches. I have never got used to using a mobile phone as a timepiece. Much easier to look at a wristwatch. Cameron needs to get some good advice on his wardrobe. I suspect he was dressed by his mum and now by his wife.

I have an expensive watch, bequeathed to me by my late father. Never wear it.

You're either a watch wearer or you aren't. I'm not.

I don't wear jewellery, not even my wedding band. Cuff links are about as far as I go.

My workplace is full of tits with big watches, often so big that they can't pull their shirtsleeves down.  The twin these with horrible, scuffed, pointy clown shoes and nasty tight suits with no ties.

Re: Should I wear a watch or do a Cameron?

I've always worn a watch outside the house.
Much easier in a meeting to sneak a discreet look at the wrist than crassly pull out the old giant mobile and push a button to check time. If I'm speaking or chairing and theres no wall clock or minute secretary to call every 10 minutes on agenda items I take watch off and place it in front of me.

I have about 7 or 8 of them - most $5 - $10 plain simple from Taiwan nightmarkets with various coloured nato straps, some black faced some white,  and 3 "good" ones with leather straps - still very very plain faces etc - none cost more than $200 aud. I'd still like a plain white faced Timex Easy Reader or Weekender.

I can't stand metal bracelet/straps on me and I don't like them at all on others. Many many strange ugly "sports" and "diving " watches here - I don't know or care enough to even register how expensive they are. But I'm often manfully told about how much they cost - I nod and raise an eyebrow as I wink discreetly at the nearest woman or tasteful gent like myself.

Strangely Ms fxh prefers a metal expanding bracelet male type on her cheap watches.

Its a funny old world isn't it?
