Tough places generally breed resilient people, that's not something exclusive to the Scots, but I prefer that type of environment, and because of that I like the character of Scotland, my ancestors enjoyed it so much they took it upon themselves to repeatedly raid it's border towns!
^ David Cameron is not Scottish - born in London. Scottish Conservative PMs include Douglas-Hume and Balfour. Bonar Law was born in Canada.

^^ I'm not that old!! The story about Des O'Connor fainting on stage is hilarious. There's more here - http://shinkicker.hubpages.com/hub/The-Glasgow-Empire-Stories-from-the-House-of-Terror. The Glasgow audiences loved top American stars and often got them.
Ken Dodd was a real hit at the Empire. His quote from Wikipedia is a classic - "The trouble with Sigmund Freud is that he never played second house at the Glasgow Empire after both halves of the Old Firm had just lost!"

Not only for comedians, but for rock bands too. The Glaswegians don't accept mediocre and lack lustre performances as Paul Weller found out in the early 90s.
Alex Ferguson, isn't he the one with the blue and bulbous thread veined nose?

^ Surely you mean Scotch egg!
Who's the best dressed player and manager in the English league?
Malcolm Allison -proper Geezer of the old school. I read his biography all betting, booze and birds. His coaching skills were innovative and he was more of an asset to the Old Man City than Joe Mercer.
