Oh I know - I was just interested (again) after all these years because of the hype about old Shakey's PONO - and due to fixing up my TT to hear some of my 3,000 vinyl prior to culling.

yeah - I still have my copy of Ry Cooders Bop till You Drop - one of the first (?) digitally mastered vinyls.

I have no problem with people preferring vinyl or whatever, as a preference - (hell I have an old jukebox that rattles and hums to play singles 'cos I reckon it picks up the essentially "singleness" of them - and it s fun) its when its accompanied with pseudo science and hand waving justifications, it gets a bit wearing.

On the "I must be getting old" front

Cleaning up some rooms the other day** I came across a collection of old cassettes - some originals - like a much played copy of the Tom Tom Club* album as well as compilations and recordings of other albums. Other than saving a few for nostalgia - there was no point in keeping any of them. Who nowadays has a cassette player? No one.

* A good illustration of why I don't have much time for iTunes etc - Tom Tom Club is one album I had the vinyl copy, a branded cassette copy and a CD. I purchased it 3 times and then they would want me to buy it again digitally.

** I also found a copy of an EP I have on reel to reel - in a branded box with pictures , liner notes etc released here for a local group.

What would you recommend to buy for someone slightly intimidated by all this talk of lossless formatting and 24 bit sampling? I have an iPod and set of Sony headphones, which is fine for solo evenings in, but when I have company what would you recommend? I use a Macbook, and itunes. My main living area is 20' x 24' with12' floor to ceiling. I think I need something with a pair of speakers with a good degree of separation, and I would love to have everything wireless. Every time I hit the hi fi shops I end up dealing with a spotty and slightly condescending youths who think they are talking to a dinosaur from the gramophone era, which, truth be told they are. My daughter mentioned something called a 'Jawbone' but it just seems to be a row of tweeters which would give no stereo separation at all. I can spare about 500 quid from my coal and gin fund. High end Hifi shops are lacking where I live, but I could make a 'trip to town' if you are recommending something slightly exotic or unavailable online.

In the days of vinyl I used to yearn for a Lin Sondek without actually getting one. Now, thanks to digital formats I have a massive amount of stuff on hard drives that can either be played by hooking up a pair of 25 year old Bose Room-mate Active speakers or albums are burned to CD for playing on a hi fi if people are coming round. I've never been happier. My my, hey hey, Shakey!

^You may well be pleasantly surprised at what you jukebox will go for. They're extremely expensive over here: 2,500 Euros and up with decent ones in the 4-6 grand range.
