The biggest threat to many of us is from the carcinogen and androgen disruptive chemicals in our environment and food, on top of this your body will get damaged from elevated stress level leading to oxidative stress and and the cancers that causes, and then finally not performing weight bearing exercise, causes the body to stop producing insulin, so expect type 2 diabetes too if you don't do weights regularly.

That is true, but when continuously caused by mental stress and not physical stress the body does not then have the cortisol drop back to a low level, and remains in the blood longer, causing further damage and not allowing the body to heal, we were design for a lot of physical stress, but not so much of the other sort. Anyway, you might be a doctor, I only have a passing interest. By that's my grip on it.

You've got to walk for several hours, but it is good for burning fat, cycling on an exercise bike also, but walking is recommend for those who need to avoid strenuous exercise. It won't go much of a way to improving insulin resistance, but in terms of weight management it's good for the older gents..

The way I see it,

If you want to get fit you have to do weight bearing and cardio workouts, when I can be bothered I do weights, and cycling, although running I found to be far more beneficial than cycling, I enjoy cycling more so I do that, but I don't do longer than an hour, and try and keep the gears high, so I'm using more strength.

Also you need to eat fats, protein and sugary as well as slow release carbs, you will also need to rest, and eat about twice as much you do when you're not working out. Weights raise your basal metabolism, so you will burn greater amounts of energy while at rest, but cardio will burn high amounts of fat after about half an hour when your body switches to burning the fat reserves, so a combination of the two styles or circuit training will get most people on the way to truly being fit, the idea of diets and walking just sounds like a cop out to me, most people put that weight back on, and also it's not sustainable for your body to produce all the hormones it needs from restricted fat diets etc,
