Dressing for dinner on a cruise

I am soon to depart on the holiday of a lifetime a Royal Carribean cruise. Can the forum advise on appropriate attire?

Mrs Empson had been looking forward to dressing formally for ‘fine dining’ in the restaurant and had bought several outfits. But on the first night they walked in to discover all the other diners in jeans, T-shirts and leathers.
One biker said to her: ‘I think you are in the wrong dining room, ma’am.’
‘We didn’t dress up at all after that,’ she recalled.

Old farts who look like ZZ Top and ride motorbikes seems to be a peculiarly American thing.

Re: Dressing for dinner on a cruise

well various cruise dining experiences are much like the restaruants you find on dry land .. you have claridges & mcdonalds .. no idea of what royal carribean is like myself ..

why not wear a dinner jacket if you have one for dinner? since you have the time and if you want to dress correctly just go for it  .. i usually wear a dinner jacket when going out for dinner proviso being i am at home and can change before leaving to go out (often circumstance dictates i need to go out straight after doing something else earlier on) ..
