I am indeed new to clothing clothing theory...I did not even know it existed, give me a few theorists, and I will look into it.
Könich Eckat I. is not pleased I think.
Between all the frothing and name calling he has some points though that are not completely unwarranted. I don´t think men are in fear of wearing suits and there are certainly parts of society both in- and outside of the US that intentionally dress down despite considerable wealth and knowledge on how to dress “right”. Large parts of academia have such discernible clothing habits that you can easily spot if you are at a conference for cardiovascular surgery, intensive care or GM viruses while almost all of the suits you can find there would be judged somewhere between atrocious and soporifically on this forum. If we discuss about these themes in a more descriptive than normative manner things will become a lot easier.
What are you mumbling about again? Your posts are right there...you said men are terrified about making mistakes and something something and that's why you dress so well....There wasn't much thought to the junk you "theorized", but you drove home the pt that YOU are amazing at dress up. Supremely modest stuff...now is not the time to backpedal.

I think FNB has a point, and it doesn't just involve suiting, a large amount of people will follow the herd, if they think dressing too loudly or differently will bring them negative attention they will avoid it. Or some people may feel dressing outside of a comfort zone doesn't reflect their personality. I'd say the second example isn't fearful, just honest. But the first is a touch lilly livered especially if you do actually wish to express yourself.
Eckhart's method of trying to belittle FNB would be a bit more effective if he spent less time trying to give the impression he is right than actually understand the argument in front of him.
I think FNB may have earned the right to his observations over the years, and although most of them are probably well considered it is a world apart from how I wish to see clothes, but then it would be ignorant of me to ignore the meaning and emotion behind clothes, I just think it eschews more important elements about dressing.
