The Jean pool

Unlike some who were apparently Lord Fauntleroys at age 8, I have always worn jeans.

Some of my favorites are:

Basics:
Levis (Naturellement)
Calvin Klein
Ralph Lauren

HiP:
Pepe
Iceberg
True Religion
Lucky Brand

Feel free to list your favorites and why.

Re: The Jean pool

my current fave:

The Jean Shop...real slim but not skintight fit, really high quality Japanese orange selvage denim

also:
-Nudie (great fits of varying styles, denim quality ranges from good to exceptional)
-Julian Red 'california'...basically the same fit as Jean Shop but with a buttonfly (I prefer zipper) and the selvage denim not quite as nice

I own a crapload of denim and they all have a place in my rotation depending on the fit I'm going for that day.

Re: The Jean pool

When I was a boy, my parents would not buy the "cool" brands, so my brothers and I were always running about in department store house-brands (the names of which during the 60s and 70s escape me). Worst of all they were often in non-standard colours, like a funny brown or lighter-than-normal-jeans blue. I remember distinctly how rigid they were, and that they often came in a "set" with a crappy little matching jean jacket.

Once I started buying my own, it was pretty much the standards -- Levi's and Lee. Pretty bland stuff, with the occasional boot-cut or black pair thrown in. The only quirks were a couple of pairs of overalls (an ironic "homage" to the farming roots on my father's side) and a pair of the button fly Levi's. The latter I found particularly to be a nuisance given the amount of drinking I was doing.

There were, given my age, the inevitable misadventures with "painter pants" (white, of course) and acid-wash. They were mercifully brief. Let us avert our eyes from these youthful indiscretions ...

Now I get my jeans at the GAP. Usually I am looking for the simplest pair they sell. Given the dizzying array of choices, this is not as easy as it sounds. Recently I did break down and get a darker-than-average-blue pair with suspiciously wide legs which serve for a more stylish look than the lumpier, weekend-Dad type.

What I really miss are the Kettle Creek Bush Pants made of brushed cotton (I think that's how to describe it) with their wooden buttons. sad

Re: The Jean pool

Don't often wear denim but if I do I wear the LL Bean Classic LL Jeans in 'Vintage' these days with a half inch turn up purely for their 'Americana' feel.
On a European that American cut looks like little else on the High Street over here. Levis I used to love but they have been so copied that that fit of jeans is kinda 'Blah' by now, although still classic.

Bean Jeans hang off the hips (We don't eat as well as you do in the States) and have that 'Overall' look which for an absolutely casual item I kinda like. Then again I never 'dress up' my jeans.

Anybody dress up jeans over here?

Bean Jeans:  http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=double-l-jeans&categoryId=32863&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=3510&cat4=6298&shop_method=pp&feat=3510-tn&oplisting=1

Have they stopped doing Vintage?

Re: The Jean pool

Terry, I have some of those BeanJeans as well--perfect for weekends in the park, hiking in the woods, and outdoorsy activities in general.  I agree that the "vintage" finish is the most handsome.

I do dress up jeans a lot, however, and I have found that the Brooks Brothers traditional fit denims to be the perfect color, trim, straight fit, length, and weight.  I wear them all the time with sportcoats and bucs, and to my eye they have the classic lines that are just dressy enough to work with this look.  Not baggy at all.

Jeans from Brooks Brothers--yes, I am an irredeemable dork.

Re: The Jean pool

My jeans are pretty basic:

Levi's 501 1947 replica raw denim made in the USA (I have 2-3 in my rotation and dry clean them)
Nudie Regular Ralph raw denim
Some old faded Levi's 501 from the mid 90's, when some of the mainstream lines were still made in the USA.

The dark denims I dress up often with nice boots and a sport coat or blazer.

Re: The Jean pool

1) Levi's 501 XX mod. 1947, Repro Vintage Collection, indigo blue, red selvedge (love them, got two pairs);

2) Lee 101 B (European), indigo blue, decent quality and a nice yellow selvedge;

3) Levi's 617, late 90s production, bootcut, re-tailored, nice shade of distressed blue;

4) Levi's 501, off white, mid 90s, slightly taken on the thig and knee.
