This sums up Morrissey completely, a comment todays Guardian:
"Actually I'm wondering if the vitriol Morrissey attracts so easily now is partly a product of the complicated shame some of us (like me) feel about the overly earnest way we used to idolise him when we were younger.
He did more than almost any other singer to court the affections of any teenager who thought they were misunderstood and special in their little bedroom.
Now those teenagers are grown up and simply having to deal with life, they no longer want to think of themselves as the fey fops they once aspired to be.
But Morrissey will not, cannot, stop doing what he has always done - and so now appears as a monstrous nightmare to us. He won't grow up with us.
That's why he looks like a kind of werewolf now permanently stuck in the middle of a transformation from middle-aged dad into a self-indulgent teenager. It's terrifying."
