l haven't got the time at the moment to read the thread, but l will say that Isshy's site will have the ultimate essay on gemmed shoos shortly. As soon as the diagrams are done properly by computer (will need help on that) the first installment on the shoo construction essays will be ready to go. The complete guide to shoo construction, but be warned...the section of goodyear welted shoos is pretty damning, but with very good reason. l can't wait to discuss gemming failure with the folks from Cleverley - they will try to pull the wool over my eyes, but l will be having none of that.

Were you really there last year? I was staying at Marengo in a big old skool house right on beach.

I've had some good times at the Bay - its one of the few Great Ocean Road places still not totally ruined by tourist yobs. But the amount of brick venereal houses there is sad now especially around the area we both stayed at. My mate who had a house up on top of the whole mountain range overlooking the Bay - on the Busty/ Wild Dog road has sold it too.

Do you think you might get a room  to carry on this conversation? People are PMing me saying how cheesed-off they are that  you a 'gluing up' this important thread  on gemming failure, which is something  that affects all those who wear shoes.

Don't forget a cobbler will only see shoes that need repair in the first place.

There are advantages to gluing or bonding to surfaces together.

One is, that it is usually applied in a continuous bead, therefore it will not only act as an adhesive but also a sealant.

Another advantage is, that having a continuous bond as opposed to a threaded one allows for a more even distribution of forces around the bonded interface, with a sewn one it is localised, the stresses will occur around the holes. In fact holes are stress raisers in any material and compromise structural integrity.

Bonded construction is used extensively in the aerospace industries, for some of the reasons I've stated above.

What matters, is quality of adhesive, quality of preparation and quality of application.
