The Men who Made Ivy League Style

I've enjoyed reading several posts here that in one way or another relate the Ivy League style to influential men in the business who have helped to shape the look. Charlie Davidson has been mentioned rather frequently, along with J. Simons across the pond, and I'm sure there are many others.  I'd like to hear more about these guys -- funny stories about dealing with them, more on their bios, links to articles about them, etc.  Maybe someone even has been around long enough to be served by an actual member of the Press family?

I'm guessing that Horace has a rather long list of Davidson stories in his memory banks, if he's willing to part with them. And ditto for Mr. Lean vis-a-vis J. Simons.

Re: The Men who Made Ivy League Style

I was in Mr. Simons' shop while Jeff was out doing the lunch run not too long ago...

He rang back to say that the soup of the day was vegetable. J.S didn't look inspired but agreed to it & asked for a bit of bread with his.

This is the stuff that needs recording for the future I agree.

What is known about Charlie Davidson's luncheon habits?

Mr Simons was wearing a Blue Brooks (It had to be) OCBD with no-turnup, wide-wale, flat-front cords in a very pale Khaki almost heading for a kind of 'Stone' colour. A perfect Ivy break-that-isn't-a-break they had.

I bought a Navy G9 style golf jacket to slob around in. Very nice it is too.

Re: The Men who Made Ivy League Style

'Round about '87 I bought a pair of Black Beefroll Eastland loafers from J.S. ...

"Last pair in the shop in that size", Mr. S. informed as he brought them to me.

"Just shows that it was meant to be", I drunkenly quipped.

... He laughed a bit, but not very much.

9 1/2 D, they are.
Made in Freeport, Maine.
Handsewn with composition soles and a lovely deep toe.
Nice.

Re: The Men who Made Ivy League Style

Did I ever mention that I was once a Saturday Boy at the Ivy Shop?

No?

Blink & you would have missed me.

First job of the morning was to Hoover up & being new I had no idea of where the electricity sockets were...
"Where should I put this?", I enquired indicating the Hoover's plug.
"Up your bum", Ian informed me.

Oh how we laughed.

It was only day one, but I already had begun to realise that I had better try to keep my damn fool mouth shut whilst in the shop...
