As a top tier frequent flyer, I can tell you that your FF status is what determines it. In an oversell situation in coach, then it becomes a game of chance, and the person who upgrades you doesn't even see you usually until you get all the way to the gate agent. And at that point they just start clearing by random, unless your were specifically a dick to them, then they aren't giving you crap.
But looking decent usually helps in any interaction in the airport and on board, that's not really a question.
Sammy - we may be talking at cross purposes - here a flight to anywhere - Tokyo, Singapore, HK, Dubai, is at least 9 hours non stop. To EU or UK an extra 9 hours. USA = 15 hours non stop. No one gets bumped off. Upgraded only FF based on personal or company usage. No one sits in a suit for 9 hours flight plus 2 hours either end.
Had a discussion about taste in clothes with someone in the biz today. It was interesting concerning the chaos that is the world order at the moment. Do a small group of people determine taste or is it a matter of personal effort. is it with or without reference to something that has come before. Is it a mix?
And here's me thinking that the suit is a democratising garment!

^That sounds like the antics of offshore North Sea Tigers and drill hands who must be carefully chaperoned to their destination and then be kept in a highly controlled, thought-free and alcohol starved environment, less they start making decisions for themselves and using their initiative which will inevitably lead to them having farting competitions in public, behaving irrationally especially bare back riding the local whores in Nigeria, letting off fire extinguishers in hotels and consuming large amounts of alcohol the night before they have to give a blood or urine sample.
As an old director once told me: never, ever place an offshore worker on a project on land, they need to be kept at sea for as long as humanely possible!
Gold.
I dress to impress my bank manager when I need an increase in the old overdraft - not for clothes you understand - after all, as my uncle Henry used to say - you must remember your tailor and his ilk in your will. I also tend to undress, rather than dress, to impress the ladies and cannot understand the psychology of doing anything else.

If I didn't wanted to impress people I reckon I would just dress like the rest of the slobs out there!
Is Patrick your dad?
