Why is it...

...that often times, the top 1 or 2 topics in this forum cover what's happening at other fora?

Assuming that not every single person here has been banned (or has committed avatar suicide) at such fora, why not log on over there and have a bash-fest?

I suppose it might lead to banning, but as long as the commentary doesn't constitute flaming, you're generally not going to be booted.  And instead of laughing at someone from another website, you can laugh at him to his face.

Just a thought.

Cheers.

Re: Why is it...

I have neither the time nor the desire to peruse every forum. Inane Post of the Day gives me a synopsis of what's happening elsewhere and who the players are.

Re: Why is it...

^ an honest answer indeed.

Instead of post-punk or post-modern, the FNB forum can be seen as "post-clothing."

Sort of like, "screw clothing, I know all I need to know, now let's just make fun of people."

I like it.

Cheers.

Re: Why is it...

No one has made fun of me here.  If I were made fun of, I wouldn't take it personally.  I hang out here because I learn stuff every now and again and I get amused by some of the banter.  As you can see, I'm not a "Buff's Bastard."  Not even close.  I'm just a lurker and an occasional poster, and pretty happy to be just that.

What's the premise of my thread?  I was asking a simple question.

What do I know about clothing?  Well, if you're looking for a treatise on "spalla camica" or hand-sewn buttonholes, or some outrageously detailed study of the minutae of this cloth vs. that, I plead guilty to not knowing a whole lot (I'll leave threads like that to the likes of Darren Beaman and Carlo Franco -- both prolific writers in this particular genre).  I own some good suits, some good shirts, a few good pairs of shoes.  I suppose that's the extent of my knowledge.  Clothing is not my livelihood; I know just enough to look and feel good and I'm happy to learn whatever else I pick up along the way.

As for saying that no one on other boards has been made fun of here, that is laughable.  Did you write that post with a straight face?  Didn't think so.  I have seen worse than making fun -- I have seen ad hominem attacks, flaming of the worst kind, name it.  Not that I give half a crap -- I'm just saying.  (An obvious example is the fact that the colorful cowboy shirt AK made for a client a while back has been posted here ad nauseum as if making that shirt destroyed all his credibility as a shirtmaker -- you know, the way selling on eBay destroys credibility...right).  Anyway.

As for f-bombs, I was not advised of the rule.  You're the "King-in-dee-Castle" (as Borat would say), so I respect the rules.  No more f-bombs.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Re: Why is it...

Um, fellas ... on second thoughts, are you really feeling good about how you have responded here? I am much reminded of a cocktail party, where a bunch of guys are laughing and talking together, and some unknown fellow ventures to join at the edge of the group: all eyes turn and judge his clothes and demeanor and no one gives him a friendly hello or even a tentative smile. Rather, there are looks of, "Who invited you?" darted at him.

I am not sure I am in agreement with the further development of this thread, but Bull's initial obervation seems pretty accurate to me. I've been lurking for some months now. Where before I used to find new posts in all sorts of categories, many regarding clothing, recently (with the exception of the long and fascinating threads on 70s skins and on Ivy League style, with pictures and even videos) there have been a great many postings to threads of the like that comment on *other* fora on the web--and the Inane Post of the Day has seemed to be the most popular thread to which to add. Personally, I am not sure why a forum would even have a thread called "Inane Post of the Day"--its seems more than a little mean-spirited to me.

Perhaps Bull was not as tactful as he might be--and perhaps I am not either, you are thinking, although I assure you that I am trying to be--but I think his initial comment bears some careful thought.

with best wishes,

David

Re: Why is it...

^ guilty as charged -- looking back at my first post vs. my second and third ones in this thread, my tone devolved.  This is probably because everyone assumed I was going on the attack (like the London Lounge guy who visited here a while back and was responded to by being called "LL doggie" and "woof woof" by FNB himself).

I was not going on the attack whatsoever.

With re: to this forum, I remember neat threads on Marc's shirts, news stories on clothing, etc.

Now it's just "Howard is such a brilliant troll, everyone else on AA is a retard!" or "Look at AK's cowboy shirt!"  I used to join in on the fun for a minute or two.  Now I think it's repetitive and a bit disturbing.

This forum had and probably still has a lot of potential as a refuge from clothing fora that take themselves way too seriously and are too commercial, but it's not that right now.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that readership hit its peak and then levelled off or even dropped slightly since the Inane Post thread began to fully dominate this forum, but I might be wrong.

Cheers.

Re: Why is it...

Thanks for responding, FNB.

But ... I took Bull's comment seriously because it seemed to state something that has been disturbing me about the recent trend of threads here.

I don't take it too seriously. I have a life.

But I still think Bull's comment has merit and that an Inane Post of the Day thread, even if begun light-heartedly, has gone on (117 pages!) long enough to be worth considering thoughtfully. When has the joke gone on too long? has the general point intended been made and are now personal points being scored and counted?

And of course I did not and would not expect you to act as censor; I just thought it was worthwhile to ask people to give a second thought to what was being said.

Thank you and take care,

David

Re: Why is it...

Look, what I said was, how about instead of jumping on Bull and saying he's in the wrong, you take a look at how you have responded to him and to others and see if you really are happy with yourself.

Evidently, TV, you are happy with yourself. That's fine. Were I you, I would not be. But if you are, fine.

Somehow, stepping in and saying, "you know, I don't think you have played very nicely with Bull here" makes me a complainer and an ingrate.

???

I don't agree, TV.

best regards,

David

PS There is something wrong with having second thoughts on what I wrote? with deciding that I sounded a bit petulant myself and thinking I should retract a statement I regret? I thought that was what "edit" keys were for? did I misunderstand?
