Re: Knitted Ties?

I like 'em but limit their use to sportcoats. Just can't see it with a suit, iammatt's pic notwithstanding.

Re: Knitted Ties?

I picked up a lot of 25 ties for 5.5 euros on ebay.

Among them, 3 silk knitted ties (navy, gold and green). I didn't plane to wear them.

When I tried one of them, I was charmed on the spot.

So I will wear the blue and may be the gold. May be the green if I go to countryside one day.

I recommand knitted ties = very stylish

Any slob wears a tie. Knitted ties seem to be worn by sophisticated dressers only.

Brown is for farmer. Green is for hunters. No loafer with a suit. No BD shirt with a tie.

Re: Knitted Ties?

Didn't James Bond (at least in the novels), always wear a knit tie with a suit?

Re: Knitted Ties?

I see the knit tie with a dressier suit as part of the "new" Italian informalization of the old Ivy League tradition of dark knit ties, gray flannel suits, and button down shirts. It's taking the old and pushing it. Astaire may have been one of the fathers of this movement. Certainly OK in areas where the knit tie is part of a recognizable tradition (i.e. New York, Milan, east and west cost cities). Less successful in the Midwest.

P.S. In reference to Iammatt's question about wearing a navy/red surcingle belt (hopefully, with tan harness leather), I think my own answer to whether this is appropriate with a suit is the same as to knit ties.

Regards,

Steven

Re: Knitted Ties?

He was having a fitting, so I may be mixing up what he was fitting and what he was wearing, but if I remember correctly:

A blue pinstriped SB 3-piece
A purple shirt with white stripes
A pocket watch with gold chain
2 large gold rings
A large black bracelet with gold ends
I don't remember the tie or shoes.

He was relly a kick.  Very friendly and having a good time.

Re: Knitted Ties?

Didn't he have a nice gingham check BD too?

My memory may be at fault here.

Re: Knitted Ties?

Just got 3 more today from the U.S.: emerald green, bright red and darkest (almost black) grey, all cotton and a little narrower than my one and only until now, a T. M. Lewin silk one in baby pink. Still looking out for navy, jet black and some nice browns and stripes.

These just seemed to vanish from the shops here at some point in the last 15 years, what a pity. So comfortable and generally 'un-stiff'.

The square end knits are shorter than contemporary ties, which is good for the undertall. I also feel the end should be an inch or so above the belt buckle with these.

So tomorrow is a 'tie day' then. Only which one to wear, and with what?

Re: Knitted Ties?

This is a great thread.

Where do you get your knit ties?  Any recommendations?  I'm considering acquiring a few of these, in extra long.

I always consoidered knit ties to have sort of an academic, bearded weirdie connotation.  But this thread is changing my mind.  I recently saw someone wearing a navy knit tie with a seersucker jacket, white OCBD, and grey flannels.

Re: Knitted Ties?

I just bought a couple of knit ties off of Michael Drake's web store. http://shoponline.drakes-london.com/zoomx-14-21-57-1-Ties-100%20Silk%20Knit.aspx

Is there a collective opinion about what colors or patterns of shirts to wear them with?

I bought one navy and one black.
