^ Dalton is a great actor but Bond was not the right role for him. Perhaps the problem was bad direction as well as the rotten scripts.

I think you are both right, the scrips were awful.
However, if you read the books you will see that Dalton gets the closest.
I believe he was considered as the initial replacement for Connery, but thought himself too young at the time.
He's a much better actor than Connery, which isn't hard to be honest.
On reflection, I still think that Charles Dance could have been the best Bond. He is best as a cold, ruthless but charismatic character.
^ Matt Lucas as Blofeld?
If there was a modern "Carry On Bond", David Walliams would be perfect in the title role.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig's Barbour will retail for £400!! - http://www.endclothing.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/117945/s/barbour-department-b-skyfall-commander-jacket/category/38/
I don't remember any spectacular booze and tobacco consumption by Dalton and he was, altogether, too wholesome - the sort that a Catholic English mother would welcome for her eldest daughter.
I just found Dalton and Brosnan to be wooden and charmless as Bond.
Anyone remember this:
