^ Fair enough. Nothing at all wrong with a bit of begrudgery. It helps the world go round and is a great national virtue - particularly in provincial Ireland.

Folks from the New World probably don't get it - but Sammy is safe enough in The Wardrobe forum. Ivy is probably too upbeat and earnest.

''Just ask Bono, who famously said: “In the US, you look at the guy that lives in the mansion on the hill, and you think, ‘you know, one day, if I work really hard, I could live in that mansion’. In Ireland, people look up at the guy in the mansion on the hill and go, ‘one day, I’m going to get that bastard’.”''

Re: The Wardrobe is back in business!

One of the sad things is the distasteful  flaunting  of sudden-found superiority that some Irish  became prone to  prior to the financial crash.

At last, after hundreds of years, we are arriving, they seemed to be saying.

It was even worse than the English who bored you with tales of how much their house was worth before the property bubble burst in the 80s.

Now, l try to avoid them, as I try to avoid the recently bereaved.

Re: The Wardrobe is back in business!

So what happened? I was invited to a conference in Watford over the weekend and met a lot of high-powered international people. The sartorial standards were pretty boring - mainly navy suits, white shirts and plain ties.
